Not a wise move in my opinion to arrest them ? It has only given them even more publicity & more propaganda. They should have just escorted them to the border and thrown them out of the country.

I think it was provocation sending a Greek clergy here. I'm sure they would have done more to Makarios..others look a bit dodgy !!! Well done the Turkish Army

It was a clear provocation and quite in order to arrest them. However I would treat EMPs same as the other Greek Cypriots and not release them until they appear before a judge and possibly get them to sign bail. ismet

Paul Including European MP Yiannakis Matsis and Loizos Afxentiou? They were lucky that they weren't all shot on sight. As Ismet said, pure provocation. Why did the UN not stop this before it happened?

AJ The UN are not in Varosha full time to my knowledge. It is strictly Turkish Army. I don't suppose that these brave souls arranged their visit through the UN or indeed informed them (pure speculation on my part). It is pathetic that given the ongoing human cost of the aftermath of the schism between the people. that the fate of a few buildings is given as the reason for the visit (particularly in my own very anti religous context churches.) If MEP's want to really understand the position and problems then they should spend time interviewing real people on both sides of the island to gain an understanding of the human cost. Harold

Bravo to the Turkish Army!! These MEPs are nothing but a load of self omportance prats! I met a couple of them at the Maronite Church and when I asked them what they were doing here they tried to burble out that they were on a fact finding mission haha!! My repost was that they shold be walking around Girne, Famagusta or Lefkosia instead of hiding behind a mainly Greek Community in the west of Kayalar! They were not impressed especially when I told one to remove his cigar and hat when inside the church!! They came across as two feckless creatures without any backbone and joining the Kinnocks on the EU 'GRAVYTRAIN'

Msg 3: "So where were the UN when it mattered?" The UN has made it very clear that Turkey is responsible for Varosha as its troops occupied the town despite it being fenced off and supposedly demilitarised. They shouldn't be there in the first place therefore there's little the UN can do about it.

Msg 7: "It was a clear provocation and quite in order to arrest them." Really? Are you a witness to the exact circumstances? Do you know the identity and locus of the church concerned. Was it within the fenced off area? Or is it the one you can walk right up to without any checkpoints and which the Turks allow visitors to see from time to time? Or is it just coffee shop jury time again?

They broke the law and were caught. If it had been me, I would still be locked up. It is the same as that church at Christmas, a deliberate attempt to cause trouble and, once again, the dullards in the EU will fall for it.

RE msg 15, Harold 2555: (...) The UN are not in Varosha full time to my knowledge. It is strictly Turkish Army. (...) ▶ Not quite 'officially' so. From a recent letter to me on behalf of the highest Turkish Army commander in Cyprus (TUPFICYP): "Primarily I would like to express to you that Fenced Varosha area is under the responsibility of TRNC".

I can understand all of your concerns, the closer Turkey get to joining the E.U . the more unsafe you all feel ,with the political situation in the TRNC ??? having no income of its own and having to accept money from Turkey to stabilize its government and pay for them to prop up the TRNC , Look at the middle East , get an idea of what is coming to the TRNC ????????????????????? GOOD LUCK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Traditionally the Poles are Turk haters! I am not surprised that Jaroslaw Leszek Walesa and his mate were busying themselves in "Varosha", probably trying to gather up some form of propaganda material in the European Parliment. He is a member of the CHRISTIAN DEMOCRAT PARTY in Poland and the Orthodox Church (Polish veersion of the Greek Orthodox religion). This was nothing more than the Turk hating Byzantine Orthodox church, sticking its nose into local politics and trying to gain fame for its members - in other words "stirring shite" yet again! I say they should have shot the bastards and made martyrs of them instead!

Hello BigOz re msg 27 You have a very 'interesting' take on Lech Walesa's son 1/ He is a Roman Catholic... 2/ I know plenty of Poles and they don't 'hate' Turks 3/ Plenty of Orthodox Russians and Ukrainians holiday in Turkey 4/ Plenty of TR guys are quite happy to visit Kiev ( Kyiv) in the search for a Former Soviet Union wife... 'stirring shite' is the continued presence of TR troops in what is *supposed* to be a UN patrolled zone... and using Varosha / Maras as a 'bargaining chip'

Msg 28. No, it's not Ayia Zoni. That church is inside the walled city, not far from St George of the Greeks. It could possibly be http://www.whatson-northcyprus.com/interest/famagusta/famagusta/icon_museum.htm , but that was only built in 1960, and is far from derelict, so doesn't quite tie in with the tone of the story. Maras is quite a big place, so I'm sure there are other churches, but I don't have any information about them.
