Having visted the TRNC reguarily for the last 3 years, we even have an apartment (1.5 years overdue to be finished) here, I was caught out last week and paid 10Ytl for 2 ice cream cones in Girne. It won't happen again, but what would a new tourist think and tell there friends back home? No wonder numbers are down...

Perhaps you could tell us all where you bought these ice creams so we can avoid it. Thanks.

It will be my pleasure to tell you, just up the street opposite the Attaturk statue, which has the cafe at the end with I think orange chairs outside. Its on the right about 100 yards up, ice cream fridge on the front.

witchfinder but what would a new tourist think and tell there friends back home? No wonder numbers are down... Do you honestly think that tourism in the TRNC is dependant on the price of ice cream in Girne High Street? If that is all you have to moan about then the rest of your holiday must of been exceptionable. AJ

I have to agree - tourists can get overcharged in any resort - I have often paid ridiculous prices for drinks, ice cream etc across the world - did that become a judgement on the place ? of course not. At least in cyprus you dont get pick pocketed, robbed or mugged as you sadly see so often across many cities and resorts (and everyone comments on getting robbed and mugged by builders and lawyers , I am taliking about tourists !) And isn't that the sort of thing you should tell your friends ??

Def. over charged. However, how do they know you are a tourist? Were you asked for 10tl or did you hand note over and not wait for change? I walk around in shorts, t-shirt and sandals most of the time and last time had ice cream there couple of months ago think we paid 2tl each!

Well the Icecream Van that comes down my road charges 4YTL for a cone, and I have to provide my own chair to sit on while eat it! (eat the icecream, not the chair). I tried bargaining with him, but he won't budge. Girne harbour front must surely be the most expensive place to eat / drink in TRNC - comparing like with like, of course - I don't know what they charge you for an icecream in the new Savoy!

If you had gone to Mardos next to Lemar in Girne, you would have paid 10ytl for 2 ice creams with the wrap around cones and 4 scoops each cone of any variety from a choice of at least 10, do try it next time you are over. Amaretto and banana flavours are yummie.

keith Of course it is the most expensive place in the TRNC, just as London is in the UK. But everyone has a choice. You ask the price and if you are not happy then you buy elsewhere and believe me there cheaper ice cream vendors in Girne. AJ

No I did not eat them on the premises, and why do people get snidy comments from other users on here, it does put me off posting anything. I am not a tourist I have property in the TRNC and the whole find it a great place to visit which is mainly down to the locals, there are some ex-pats that seem to want to change this, best they go back to where they came from. ps , i agree with you people do not need to respond with snidy replies , but your comments about ex pats , probably do'nt help either , that's how slanging matches start ----------- moderator

I wish these miserable sods would go back to miserable UK and leave our boards alone. This is a great country, love it or get lost. By the way, have to agree that 10ytl is a disgraceful price to pay for 2 cones. ps , you are a new member , and your posts are still being moderated ,comments like { i wish these miserable ........... } ect , they do not benefit anyone and do nothing to improve relations on the board , so please think before you post ---------- moderator

I do not see a problem in ascertaining the full facts when somebody makes a statement about bad service etc. So often people say service in a restaurant was rubbish but do not say why. There was a case a few weeks ago on this BB of somebody complaining about a certain restaurant. It transpired that the owner of the restaurant knew the poster and responded here. The person was making derogatory comments but had not had the decency to complain in the restaurant at the time. I will defend my adopted country every time as I always did in England and with full facts will defend and support any complainant if appropriate. In this case, to say you were charged 10tl for 2 ice creams does not to me tell the full facts. Sorry witchfinder and others.

At the end of the day £2 for a cone of ice cream is hardly outragous. We had some drinks once in Girne harbour (Horbour club) and I was distracted by a phone call when I paid - I accidently gave the waiter the amount in CYP instead of YTL - He came running after us with the change - this is generally how people are there - honest, kind and thoughtful. And - Acapulco is YTL20 per adult / YTL5 per child this year - no rip off.

cyprusishome 'I do not see a problem in ascertaining the full facts when somebody makes a statement about bad service etc. So often people say service in a restaurant was rubbish but do not say why.' Absolutely cih, that is why I asked the question about whether the purchaser had confirmed the price before purchase (and still no answer). AJ

AJ the reason why I haven't answered is the deed is done, 99 times out of a hundred I have no problems whatsoever in the TRNC and as is often said on here I am reguarily corrected when I give too much and have had several discounts on transactions. So why have you got to pursue it like a dog with a bone. And if it helps you to berate me even more, no I did not ask the price or see it displayed so I FULLY TAKE RESPONSIBILITY for my loss in this transaction are you happy now?

Interesting answer witchfinder. I do not think anyone has "pursued you like a dog with a bone". You made a quite open statement about a transaction that may give others the wrong impression abou life in TRNC. You cannot support your statement with factual information and therefore we who live here have to defend our corner vehemently. Interesting to others, you started a thread about Masons in TRNC which brought about a lot of activity. Why would you ask such a question about an organisation that prides itself on anominity when you state you are a member????? Personally I think you have done yourself no favours by starting each of these threads. This is my home now and I will defend it to the end, unfortunatley you have left yourself open to abuse and attack from all quarters. Please criticise this country or the UK at any time but always support with factual information.

So you are saying it is wrong to say when you have been ripped of by a ice cream sales person and you are not to ask if there is any MASONS in NC and it does NOT prides it self of anonymity if people want to know if they are a member all they have to do is ask. So before you start slagging of please get your facts right i am sure MASONS who are in NC will not like your comments so keep them to your self or keep quite.

Dear Cyprusishome why have you brought up another thread that has nothing to do with this one, or is an attempt to make some bad point about me, just for the record that other thread has produced some private replies to myself from people with the same interests, as I was curious to know. And I do not hide the fact I am in that organisation, in fact I'm proud of the good charitable work we do. You yourself have said my comments may give the wrong impression about the TRNC to other people, how do you think they may feel if on their first visit it happens to them, without the knowledge I have gained, of the kindness and generosity of the Cyprus people having lived in Cyprus for several years.

£2.50 for an ice cream does seem a bit steep but you'd easily pay that in many other holiday resorts. That was probably the price, I very much doubt they upped it because you were (or appeared to be) tourists. As for people posting about restaurants but not complaining on the night to the restaurants. I often read restaurant reviews in newspapers etc which might mention the service was bad etc but they don’t complain on the night to the owner (I assume, is this any different to people mentioning on here they didn’t have a great experience?

witchfinder if its on the right going up from statue, then the same happened to us. Just dont go back and in the long run they lose out.Plenty of other vendors. I like the little stand at the kiddies bit at harbour. As for the Masons, some of my best friends are in that organisation and am told if asked then they will not hide the fact.I believe they are not allowed to deny it. I hope you will continue to ask or comment on any subject,it would be a very boring BB if we all followed the party line.

Wilts Girl: "I often read restaurant reviews in newspapers etc which might mention the service was bad etc but they don’t complain on the night to the owner (I assume, is this any different to people mentioning on here they didn’t have a great experience?) Fair point. A reviewer should really take the bad service and perhaps only mention it if it's particularly bad in order to to test customer attitude. Then utterly flame the place in their next column. A few years back there was an expat who did "reviews" in one of the papers. Trouble was they were appallingly written and rarely critical of anything. Having a hubby who was a retired government official and clearly knew everyone didn't inspire her to do much impartial writing.

The old chap was there this PM. It is fun when he does the full routine with the kids of putting the white stuff onto a cone. If you haven't seen it everyone go down to old harbour on sundays during the summer especially.
