All too frequently in TRNC - have you lifted the lid to see if it is full? If you do, mind out for the mob of cockroaches that could run up your arms as you lift the lid!

I have been told by my neighbors that every 5 years it would be beneficial to get a 'sludge sucker' in and usually your local council may be able to provide this service at a cost. Be prepared to pay around 60-100Tl depending on how many soak away's you have. Oh and keep your windows closed when they are doing the dirty.

Thanks for the info on the smelly toilet, funny thing as it's not full and doesn't have any roaches - the stink pipe was altered years ago and worked up till now! It or the conecting piping doesn't look blocked and no visable leaks - strange!

Are you sure it's the toilet and not the basin/shower/bath plug holes.... Water in the toilet acts as a Gas Trap...you may not have U Bends on the plumbing from the basin ,shower ,bath..try some caustic drain cleaner down the plug holes...best of luck

We used to suffer from this. Firstly, if you have the flexible "concertina" type waste pipes on the basin and bath, make sure they have been bent into a U bend, so making a trap. Builders don't usually do this they just leave the straight pipe in place. Secondly, lift the drain access cover closest to the w.c. make sure there is no waste wedged into corners. Even the smallest amount will produce quite a stink! We used quick dry cement to form a smooth flow path and.. Problem solved!

5 years is about right if you are out here full time. The company we used was good - Tel No for tank emptying 0533 8612381. I can't tell you the current charge but it wasn't unreasonable when we had it done.

The smelly bathroom syndrome used to be a common occurrence for us. We did as suggested above, ensure that all of the sinks had a U bend in the concertina waste pipe, and the smell disappeared. What was not possible however was to do the same for the showers/baths as there was no access to do this. Another plus point of creating the U bend is that you will stop the cockroaches from getting in that way. Although they can survive 30 minutes in water thet will not voluntarily go through water, and since the U bend will be full of water then you have solved 2 problems in one.

Your local athority offer a septic tank emptying service, prices vary on everything here in Cyprus. Has your stack got a vent pipe on, sometimes the builders don' fit them and the whole system takes on pressure as gas is given off.

For those leaving a holiday home empty for quite a while it's worth noting that the U bends can dry out in the summer and allow smells in. If someone is keeping an eye on your home ask them to let some water into the sinks, baths and showers every once in a while.

Filling the U bends with Washing Up Liquid will serve to stop U bends drying out while you are away...

We have two massive tanks and we have them pumped out about every six months. We use loo paper so they fill faster. If they are not full and you are getting smell try some bleach. If you have roaches then the local gov will come and spray for free.
