Speaking afterwards President Derviş Eroğlu said that the Greek Cypriot Side’s proposals to hold a simultaneous census on both sides of the island was unacceptable. The next meeting between the two leaders will be held next Wednesday on the 30th of March while the special representatives will be meeting a day before on the 29th. Speaking to reporters on his return to the Presidential Palace, President Derviş Eroğlu said that the main topic of today’s meeting had been the issue of citizenship. He said that the Greek Cypriot leader Demetris Christofias had proposed that a simultaneous census be carried out on both sides of the island, something he added was unacceptable for the Turkish Side

“We are a separate state. We can’t accept this. I discussed the issue with the Prime Minister yesterday and we have agreed to hold a separate census here in the TRNC in cooperation with the United Nations. We however have no intention of holding a simultaneous census with the South” he said. Eroğlu also pointed out that divergences remained on the issue of citizenship between the two sides.

Responding to questions, the President said that the government had already launched work to conduct such a census. As to when the census would be carried out, President Derviş Eroğlu said that he had called for a meeting with the State Planning organization tomorrow. “What is important is that the census be carried out according to international standards and criteria” he concluded.

They are pussyfooting around instead of getting on with Territory and Property issue. Solve that one and the rest will solve itself. Once that is solved that will actually determine how may settlers will have to go back. Of course they can always remain here and buy property with their compensation they are due. What's the matter with these leaders, I get the feeling they are just passing the time so they can claim it's the other side's fault.

I have just seen an advance copy of an agreement reached between both sides stating the Island will be reunified later this year, and the GC have agreed to all the TCs demands in full. This agreement will be signed NEXT Friday morning, and will be released to the press later that afternoon. You heard it first on Cyprus44. Michael
