martinD41/Msg 4: How absolutely correct you are! Rather than wasting money on blue light emitting machines, which may 'zap' a few moths, one may as well screw in yellow light bulbs, which are a slight deterrent to insects - but certainly not mossies and sandflies. I have an Italian made machine [non Co2], which has a blueish light and an internal fan that sucks in insects venturing too close to the light. The 'victims' are then sucked into a net box [removable for emptying] and die from dessication caused by the fan. This machine does catch some mosquitoes and 'zillions' of sandflies, but still doesn't give adequate protection. In fact, the machine, although catching plenty, due to the light, actually attracts more insects than would normally be present. For almost total protection, one needs to buy one of the Australian, or USA, Co2/butane gas machines, as widely used by homes, clubs and hotels. Last time I checked they cost about AU$1500.

We brought a " zapper " with a blue light, ( like the butcher's used to have ) out with us about six years ago, and for a few days gained great satisfaction from listening to the insects fry on the grill. Next time we looked there was a large preying mantis picking the bits of " fried food" from the grill.....yummy ! The zapper went in the bin.

Hi everyone, Light-traps, the earliest using paraffin or acetylene lamps, have been used for many years to catch insects. Some types of insects, including mosquitoes and sand flies appear to be strongly attracted to light; they are positive phototactic. Waddo, the largest one is 175 TL. Please note that all spare parts are also available and we give one year warranty on our products.

Is it an electrocution type then? if so it will be useless against sandflies surely as the wire bits are too far apart?
