I am moving to Cyprus & want to bring my furniture & personal effects, a 20'container load.

Does anyone know if I have to pay import duty / taxes ?

Some items are old , some new.

Any advice will be appreciated.

As far as I know; you should make a detailed packing list what ever is put into the container as tree copies, as you come to North Cyprus, you will apply to the customs and excise department in Nicosia North as you are coming to live here and ask for import permission in advance and I believe they will give you free entry import licence for once only, this will not cover any motor vehicle. But they will stamp in your passport saying you will be resident

Your shipping agent in TRNC should deal with all of this for you. Do a complete inventory of your stuff and make several copies of this. If you arrive here before your container, you can speak to your agent and get him to take you round to the relevant customs offices etc. and also immigration who will stamp your passport with a 6 month 'window' during which time you can bring in personal effects (not vehicles). There may be a small charge for TV sets and the like or something that the customs deem to be brand new, but you are unlikely to have to pay much.

My TV Licence was 60tl. If you have 'as new' things, suggest you take them out of original packing and pack well, otherwise the onus is on you to prove the item is not new if you get a stroppy customs official.

The regs state, before you arrive here, in readiness to come and live you can only bring in personal effects - second hand, otherwise you'll have to pay duties. But once you're here, you can only import new items, all of which attract duties!!!

When your items arrive, they will be accompanied by a couple of customs guys who will do a spot check on what's in what box, whether an item is new or old, and they will decide if you have any duties to pay - normally not. As msg 3 advised, your shipper will advise. Note, communications equipment - fax, radio etc. requires a separate licence/permission to import - doesn't cost a lot but it's just a nuisance getting the paperwork ready.
