There is a wonderful stray dog that has taken up residence outside my gate..he is soooo adorable, all he wants is a cuddle. Whenever anyone stops and looks at him, he immediately rolls onto his back wagging his tail furiously, just to get you to give him a tummy rub.

Now i have absolutely no problem with him being there, i even feed him when i can, however, the trouble is he is covered in ticks and fleas, but i can't afford the frontline...so if anyone has a spare ampule or spray, Brian would be most happy to be tick free......

Would love to help, but have the same problem. Have you tried KAR, cos' they'll do a clean-up and get him neutered at the same time.

Failing that......Steve at the Acmenya Market/Chateau Lambousa does 3 doses for 35tl (Bob Martin). Or get someone to bring you out a load of flea and tick collars (only £1 in Mr Pound shops in UK).

Good luck.

Daisy do you know if the poor dogs on the roundabout in town ever get treated ? You just got me thinking about the poor things..This time of year the ticks seem to be about the most..Could you perhaps post a photo and maybe find the poor thing a home too..Hope so. Good luck

To be honest Spider, he seems perfectly happy...if not a bit lonely...and once he's cleaned up, he will be able to come into my yard for a play...he looks like a boxer cross, and has the happiest waggiest tail i've ever seen...of course it would be lovely to find this little guy a home, but there are so many others on this board looking for homes, who are a lot more desperate. However, saying that...if anyone would like to pop by and see him, drop me a line.

Didn't know that Frontline had been stopped!!! You can still buy it on the web from suppliers in the UK and then get someone to bring it over from UK. I know that's not what you were asking, but its the news that Frontline has been stopped that amazed me. The best thing to buy if you possible can, is one of the Paraban collars ( I think they are 35tl) this covers ticks, fleas and sandflies for (3 months I believe) and all the Vets sell them. Have you a kind hearted neighbour who'll go halves with you? Ticks are disgusting things and make the animals lives really miserable. They drop off when they have sucked all the blood they can, but if you can help this little soul he will be eternally grateful to you!!

Tango, the idea of posting this was really because i can not afford to buy a collar or chemical, and i was rather hoping that someone had a spare they could donate to Brian. I'm already feeding him, which i am struggling to do...so any help would be great.

No problem Phil!! Brian is quite comfortable on an old blanket outside the gate at the moment...i so wish i could get him de-ticked and de-flead...then he could come inside for a cuddle, even Poppy is quite taken with him!! He's eaten a bowl of pasta soaked in meat juice...not the healthiest as there wasn't any actual meaty bits in it...but at least he's full and comfortable...

I was really hoping there would be someone on here today who had a spare ampule of Frontline or an equivalent they could spare...oh well maybe tomorrow...

If he is in a bad way flea and tick wise, I think you will need frontline or equivalent, not Bob Martin, as I don't think it's strong enough. My cats had never had fleas in their lives until I used Bob Martin, trying to save money. I went back to frontline (which you can get in chemists here) and they were gone in a couple of days.

Msg 16...Just to put you in the picture,We have 7 cats(strays) which we had neutered at our own expense,1 dog which we rescued from a rubbish dump,..The Dog and cats all up to date with injections..Flea/tick treatments every 3 months ..Paraband collar for dog every 3 months ,front line spray for cats .95tl a pop ...and countless other sundries.. On top of that we have (with the help of KAR)rescued up to date 17 pups.......If msg13 has to ask for a donation,ie ..1 ampule of frontline (3 months worth)for a stray, how does she expect to be able to treat here own animals, every 3 months?

Tango1...Ticks are disgusting, but not only are they disgusting, and make the animal miserable , they are also a serious health hazard to Animals AND Humans alike,as they carry "Lyme Disease"!!!!If you live in an area frequented by Sheep and Goats (which are NOT dipped here)your chances of contracting Lyme disease are greatly increased....Frequent anti tick treatment every three months is an ABSOLUTE must ,in order to reduce the possibility of contracting this "Very Unpleasant" bacterial infection...

Sienna, please, please donate them to KAR, they are desparate for anything to protect the dogs in their care particularly at this time of year when tics are everywhere particularly in the soil and grass. MartinD41, I know about the other infections and diseases one can get from ticks etc and it worried me sick when I saw a TC lady a few days ago, pulling them out her dogs and then squeezing them between her figures, so the blood ran out. Horrendous!!

Which tick treatment do members recommend. I just got 1 large and 1 small dog ampule in the vets opposite St. Tropez restaurant and she wanted 68TL, which sounds steep.

Vaughan we were using Fibronex (from Girne Pet Centre approx 50TL) which lasts for 3 months but have now switched vets and they use Advantix which is about 35TL but only lasts 1 month. I have also seen Advantix for sale at the pet shop next to Aydin Pharmacy in Lapta for 30TL. The Fibronex, in my experience over about 3 years, was very effective and we are in a high sheep/goat area.

I read this thread and thought, I'll get some Frontline (or similar) and send to Lilli to hand around - was APPALLED at the cost; tried Wilkinson's, £shop, the Market, everywhere, but unbelievable prices - my pension won't stretch that far - soooooooooo - thought, there must be 'natural' remedies (not had a dog for four years so not up to speed on the cost of things) and found this - hope the link works......

msg 14...NO! That was not a begging post, and i am offended at you for saying that! I am more than able to keep my own dogs clean and parasite free, however, in the 4 and a half years i have lived in my village, i have spent a small fortune on the strays that show up, not to mention all the food i have put out for them, in the hope of making their lives a little more bearable. I have never once asked for help in any way before, and i can assure you, i did not do this lightly, however my situation has changed somewhat drastically, and i am no longer able to do these small but essential things for the strays of Karsiyaka! OK, so i may not be out there saving their lives or anything, but i do at least try to make life a little easier for them.

Hope this makes things a little clearer for you.

Sienna..that is a most wonderful and generous offer...and for what it's worth, i do believe that KAR would be the best place to donate them to...on behalf of all animals, thank you so much.

Have a look at http://www.bestpetpharmacy.co.uk . They do a flea/tick treatment called Effipro which has the same active ingredient as Frontline but is considerably cheaper, £11.65 for 4 pipettes (for cats) & £16.15 for a medium sized dog. They also do 24 pipettes for dogs for £93.22.
