Please don't get annoyed if this question is an old one. I am new to Cyprus 44 and finding my feet. I need advice about which system to choose. I gave up with digiturk - the same programmes year after year..

What is nilesat like - are there a good choice of programmes ? I DON't like soaps or SPORTS - would be looking to view films, documentries, news of course.

I would appreciate your learned opinions - sensible please. Thanks

We have Nilesat and are quite happy with it, plenty of films ( English) and series too, also several news channels.

http://www.mbc.net/portal/site/mbc-en/ Good link for you to let you know what is on films on Nilesat - all free to view so you only need the sat receiver and the dish - no other charges apart from installation.

Call Satman or email on acipakcag@hotmail.com. He is a good guy who speaks plain and simple good English. Will give you all the advise you need and probably stop you paying out loads for things you don't need anyway.

Message 7: Acip is a really nice guy but, in our experience, totally unreliable! We had a problem with Nilesat approx 8 months ago and Acip was coming to fix it 'tomorrow'. After numerous phone calls and broken promises, we got somebody else to do it. This wasn't the first time either!

Yup, "tomorrow" is a Cypriot word of many meanings and have to agree that it can mean the day after today or sometime in the future but he has always fixed any problem I have had and without a great unknown charge attached to it. His knowledge of sat systems is extreemly good and he is worth talking to about all sorts of communications issues.

Anybody can install the Nilesat system for you provided they have the correct equipment and the all important satellite finder - after that any support you need should be minimal and caused by faulty equipment or the constant change in frequencies that Nilesat seem to have come up with in the past few months. Still a much better option if you only watch films and the occasional news. If you are a soap fan then look elsewhere!

MBC have constant adverts through the films but once you get used to them they are handy for toilet breaks and coffee/tea/beer replenishments as well. No smokers bubbles but then no swearing either.

Good luc

Two of my neighbours have had free satelite channels, one brought their own box out the other had it done by Tektan, I seem to remember the first then had Tektan out to install. They seem happy and get a decent amount of channels. Some here have had their fingers burnt with 12 month up front and high installation costs. We have digiturk and we not wild about it and seem to spend most of out time downloading and playing through a media player on the TV. Ideally we would like choice, we are sometimes away for up to 3 months so a payment holiday would be good too. We try also to be legal especially as we live in a foreign country. There is someone on here who offers free UK TV via the internet if you have a good internet connection you can watch live or download all current UK channels. My choice would be look at what you can get on the free channels and download, use someone reliable to install such as Tektan, watch out for large payments up front.

Perhaps someone should publish an 'Idiots' guide to Satellite. I have tried comparing all the different services but am really still no wiser. For instance is the service advertised at £100 at the top of this thread the same as the one advertised for 229 euro by Satellite Cyprus, if so why the difference in price.

This is not a criticism of any of the suppliers just a request to find out what I get for my money when getting satellite. There seem to be so many options available that I dont want to make the mistakes that many here seem to have made. I will be looking for mainly English language channels and will decide on whether a premium package is necessary depending on what is available.

Arriva (see separate thread going at the moment). Highly recommended - we've received an excellent service from them
