Having not contributed much to the board but watch it regularly and see the many posts now being closed by the admin. what do the members think a good moderator should do / be and how should they moderate things

I believe a good forum admin should leave their personal views aside and respect fellow members opinions at all times. They should only intervene when members become abusive or go against any other of the forum rules.

I agree with Cooper, and I think in general the administrators/moderators on here do just that.

I have no complaints whatsoever about how this forum and website is run.

Anybody with complaints are free to leave and use one of the other websites/forums available.

That is not to say that constructive criticism and suggestions cannot be made, they often are.

Moderators are constrained by the site rules and the members interpretation of them - that is the hard fact of the matter. Moderators will always be able to please some of the people but never all of the people!

I truly think that when a thread is closed, instead of putting things like "served no purpose" the mod who closed the thread should simply put "Thread Closed - Rule *** applies". That would force members to look at the rules more often and to gain an understanding of them. Simple process of "if there is no rule to apply then the thread must stay as it is" should also be applied.

Therefore - first look at the existing rules, amend them as required now the site has been up and running for long enough, ask members for what they consider to be essential rules, draft and issue a new set of rules - enforce them rigidly! Nobody likes a moderator as all the mod's will understand.

Well done to them all.

In general moderation is better than it was as some members that stir things up have left !

Theres always going to be people that *stir things up* as you say but they often have valid points however contentious, my only thoughts on it is the *serving no purpose* bit, surely it will die a natural death if its serving no purpose, if people are still posting then its serving a purpose I s'pose this could be looked at as stirring things up, and sometimes things need stirring up

I think they do a very good job on this forum, they take a good responsibility for it & the members. There are a a lot of members & some very negative people who do just love to whinge about everything however, when there is some humour involved it can be very funny! I find some members highly entertaining, as long as they don't become abusive. I think on the whole the admin forum are very good at spotting the trouble makers out there so well done!!

I for one, am sick of the sniping towards Alsancak Jack. I've never met him, had email contact with him once and don't know him from Adam, but he appears to close more topics down than anyone and therefore, attract most of the flak.

From what I've read, he's been right many a time. But if there is a problem, surely it is for the other mods and Izzet to deal with it. As Alsancak Jack is still here, I guess that they don't see it as a problem. Some threads on here are out and abusive and childish.

Maybe the other mods should dive in more, but it is a thankless task and the world without them would be very much different. Leave them be, enjoy the forum and stick to the rules.

Just my two, three and four pennorth-worth.

Just two points from me:

1. Moderators should be as free as anybody else to express their views but it does not mean that they cannot moderate without bias.

2. AJ is having the burden of moderation and we are very thankful to him. I for one is not as diligent or as hardworking as him but I do appreciate his efforts.

Why not just leave the lad alone, he's certainly got his hands full with some of the posters on here.

AJ does a fantastic job on this forum and has the full support of all the other admin.

At the end of the day he's only doing his (unpaid) job so please lets not have any more 'anti AJ remarks'.

Isnt this just typical of this board YET AGAIN the original topic was "what do you think makes a good mod" and next thing its all about AJ, and then a "mod" then starts pulling it all over the place

What makes a good mod ? IMHO someone who lets things run a natural course unless it gets nasty, and by that I mean 'nasty' or if the original poster requests it be closed, and someone who does not let their personal bias sway their judgement, as happens on here too often
