At around lunch time today the Asbank was held up by a gunman, I believe around 15 K Lira was taken, (not certain).

The girls in there were badly shaken, and from what I believe the gunman made off in the direction of the GAU.

(Hope it didn't come out of my Account)

Unfortunatley, My Cypriot friend told me it is already getting popular, Won't it be a shame if these lovely friendly banks and their staff have to get like the UK.

I do hope not, hopefully when they get caught they will get some real punishment.

I would just chop there hands off and stamp Bank Robber on their forehead.

are we sure it wasn't the finance minister, Mr Tatar? I hear the government are short of a few bob

On a serious note, has anyone noticed that crime seems to be on the increase?

A few years ago there were hardly any reports of serious crime, but burglaries increased and now an armed robbery. Worrying.

Oh Matula you naughty girl - I agree pity it wasn't Akfinans but the way they are behaving do you think they have 15000 lire? They seem pretty desperate to me.

Why is everyone surprised? This place is like the wild west in terms of the "law". It was only a matter of time that the cowboys wore guns as well as hats.

They've robbed all the Brits so it's the banks turn now.

TRNCVaughan,

It makes a change from the banks robbing innocent elderly victims! the"wild west" complete with guns have been prevalent in the TRNC for a long time! with a bit of luck all the cowboys will turn their guns on each other! and let the indians live in peace

KKTC vatandaşı olmadığı için bankalar tarafından kredi başvurusu reddedilen Fahri Baran (copied from above link)

Because of not being TRNC citizen, his(Fahri Baran) loan application was refused..................

Although praise to the police for catching him, but it was hardly a difficult job, the guy had been in there 3 times previously, and it wasn't like he was wearing a ski mask....

I heard that he had been refused for credit 3 times. Surely he had to give a name and address to apply in the first place.

Had no intention to imply that! However,I've always supported the 'fact' that,Cypriots WERE very innocent people until foreigners arrived.

wish I could could have supported that fact too somehow just doesnt ring true wish I had your somewhat misguided faith in people forgive me for being somewhat sarcastic but 30 years as a police officer and several years living here and having visited many countries crime is committed by anyone anywhere and TCs are involved in many serious crimes it just doesnt reach the public forum as I am sure you know yorozlu

honestie;

My 'misguided faith in people' is given to me by people as I'm sure you already know.True, crime is commited by anone, anywhere.

It is good to get the true colours out of them every now and then though, don't you agree?

Andy-Pandy was obviously not mixing in the right circles......we could all pick one out of a hat.

Back in 1998 an elderly Turkish Cypriot woman living in Girne was murdered. Cyprus Today ran the story and said it had to be a mainland Turk that carried out this crime, it turned out to be her own son. Needless to say no apology from Cyprus Today.

Yorg, just a quick question. Who are Cypriots?

Before 1974 I think I'm right in saying they were Greeks or Turks in the parlance of the day, not Cypriots.

I'm English, am proud to be English, but I'm sure I have (possibly) traces of Norman, Roman, Angle, Jute, Saxon, or even Dane in my bloodstream. Smith, apart from being a common name, was a common job. So maybe not English!

But my family history might even have involved migrants, not conquerors.

There was a study recently that suggested Turks owed their genes to the Irish and that Cypriot genes went back to Italy, I guess Roman times.

Just interested, not criticising ;-)

Certainly not the ones living in sheds, unfinished houses, washing once every 2 weeks and claiming to be muslims.

I and many like myself do not fit in above.
