Does anyone know how accurate these new machines that use a satelite are for determining boundaries

If it's GPS (which I think it may be) it's as accurate as your subscription allows and the Americans will let you have (security).

I'm not sure if it's less than a metre at best.

Checking it out from other sources - ours turned out to be between 1 & 2 metres, however these were old sources, it could now be more accurate.

I visit an old lady in Bellapais who has lived here for 30 years. Recently her neighbour got the land measured as he plans to build another 2 houses. She is losing approx 6 metres by 44 metres of her land as they say it was measured wrongly 30 years ago!!!

like all GPS equipment there is a "can achieve" and an actually achieved accuracy. Some equipment boasts +/- 20mm, about an inch in old money, but then it's down to the user's ability and honesty.

I've had my boundaries measured 5 times with a difference of 2 meters between the results. There is a 10m drop on one boundary and my plan shows the border with hatched lines (i.e. a drop) but one measurement had the boundary a meter before the drop. I can understand a meter the other side because of erosion. Another problem which worried land registry a little was that myself and one neighbour (at least) had the entire main road to the village within our properties.

At the moment the accuracy of GPS is not good enough for boundary determination, about one metre at best. However, I hope one day all the gsm base stations will have the necessarry fixes and thus the accuracy will come down to a matter of a few mm. I think we have to wait for another ten years or so for this tecnology and say another 20 years before our Land Registry updates its maps accordingly.

That is very interesting and just what I needed to know Ismet. My new neighbour had the land surveyed yesterday and I have been told that my boundary, that was right 4 years ago, is now 64cm out to his favour but if what you say is true I can tell him to get st----

Still,

The LR is not relying on the GPS for their results, they measure from point to point and do some sort of triangulation. Their accuracy depends very much on the available maps.

Same thing happened to friends - each time I moved, over 30 yrs, it has been 'that olive tree to that one' or 'see that large stone well up to the other stone' sowhat happends if you already have your deeds giving the amount of land 'tree to tree' or 'stone to stone'?
