The Turkish premier said that the Turkish Side was working towards reaching a just and lasting solution to the Cyprus Problem at the shortest period of time.

“The talks have reached the point of deadlock due to the Greek Cypriot Side which is playing for time. We want this reality to be acknowledged” he said, adding that the negotiations could not drag on like this forever.

“I believe that Britain shares our views. We need to hold a high level summit meeting with the participation of the two sides and the three guarantor powers without losing more time” the Turkish Premier said.

The Turkish Prime Minister also expressed the view that an agreement to be reached in Cyprus will not only benefit Cyprus but will create an environment for peace and cooperation in the Eastern Mediterranean.

bill,

yes indeed, such an international conference would be progress

oops, I used that highly-loaded word "progress", sorry!

seriously any realistic talks would differ from the existing charade

in two ways

firstly, there would be a prior consensus on what deal is acceptable,

ie an implicit understanding of what can be agreed

...before any politician is asked to actually sign on the dotted line

secondly, there will have been a period of re-education and confidence

-building for a considerable period:

this would of course include lifting the blockade of the north

and cobbling together common school textbooks etc

as well as many intercommunal events and structures for all stakeholders

it also might not be a total disaster if any united island joined nato as well

which in this instance could be a steadying influence
