After receiving a rather varied selction of prices, has anyone had recent experience of having a well dug and know the current cost of each foot, yard or meter. It seems to vary greatly if a machine can bore it to being manually dug.

My neighbour had a quote 2 years ago of £4000 with no charge if water wasn't found. Anything found needs checking if you are near the sea as it could easily be sea water.

my builder had mine drilled 3 years ago and it cost me £1500 for the hole to be drilled 16 metres. They said it didn't need lining and so far after 3 years they have been proved right. What it would have cost me for the same job without the builder is anyones guess

A common ploy, is they 'guarantee' water, they fill it from a tanker!!!! and you never see them again

In terms of men's measurements, I call mine "Kipling" cos it's a ruddy yard!

Just in case you are not aware, before the Brits, they had the UK TCs, until they wised up to their tricks. In them days they used to sell the same house or land to 5 people, legally.

Try Soil Tech at Chatelkoy, they charge about £7.00/ft using a 60cm drill 0533810173. They also have a 1m dia drill, very good service.

Legal or illegal ? Apart from permission to have a well dug you now need another permit to have it cleaned if it caves in.
