The major factors are Swimming pool pump and Air Con units, I have a Villa and running 1 A/C unit/pool pump for 3 hours a day (depends on month) +plus fridge, washing machine etc, approx 70 TL a week

(£30 ish!!).

and, when suffering an innumerate meter reader, many hours can be spent and miles travelled each month in an effort to get bills accurately amended and agreed (if you are lucky) at the main Girne office !

Electric is expensive in the winter time you need heat so unless you have gas central heating you will need electric oil heaters or use the aircon however, this is all expensive. Depending on the size of the villa & also swimming pool. Just make sure where ever you live you are not on builders electric as that is a nightmare & costs three times as much! In the summer you need the aircon so you still use just as much then.

it balances out thru the year , summer you use less , winter more , same as any where , its not rocket science , conserving is the best way , cheaper all year round ?

Funnily enough, I have found the opposite. Electric bills lower in winter, than in summer. Pool pump is on longer during the summer, and more use of aircon, bumps up the bills. Have used aircon for heating and halogen heaters, and bills are a good bit lower than last summers bills. Course we don't have a tumble dryer, which does eat up those units somewhat.

Do all that. Found ceiling fans are great, apart from when the temp really soars, and a/c is needed, more by the other half than me. I'd rather pay Kibtek, than suffer the earbashing if I even tried to stop the use of a/c in July and August.

You really need to take all of the bills into account to enable you to give a true comparison with the UK and then you will find it much cheaper. For example, when you bring Council Tax into the equation; my Council Tax Bill in the UK last year was £2100 whereas here it is 74tl this year!

We find that electricity is probably more expensive than any country we have visited. We have stopped using A/C for this very reason and rely on ceiling fans and stand alone fans. Mozzie's can't cope with the gale force winds they cause!! In any case, the colder the A/con is set at, the hotter it appears outside. In the coldest months our bill for the moth has been between 480tl - 500tl and we just learn to bite the bullet as I refuse to be cold, particularly in the evenings. We have cut the winter bills down this year by buying kerosene heaters, which don't smell if looked after and give out a lot of heat.

We too use kerosine heaters and find them cheap to run and very effective. Our bills (including pool and running aircon overnight in the summer) have never been more than 200TL.

I have found that installing timers that switches off aircon after 30 mins / 1 hr / 2 hr saves a great deal over a period (eg when you pop the aircon on before going to bed - you don't fall asleep with it still running until morning.. it switches off after 1 or 2 hours .. or if you've nipped out and forgotten about switching off the aircon etc).

Message 18, whats this additional tax? paid my 110TL annual "council Tax" and never been billed or asked for any thing more??

Electric depends on so many factors, I can't believe how much some people say their bills are, max monthly bill this winter 289TL using aircon for heating, immersion and electric blanket. None in use now and aircon will be used again in July /August for the same reason as message 12!!

I expect a marked drop in my electric bill this month and as was said add the £100 council tax a month payable in UK then it's a lot cheaper here.

Plus we get our bins emptied twice a week, not once a fortnight like lots of UK places now, and the roads in our village are swept.

Message 24;

Besides paying for, services: water, lighting, refuse collecting, mossie spraying there is an additional land tax to pay - bi - annually based on the size/area covered by your property.

The authorities will not accept ignorance or not receiving a bill as an excuse for paying either. We missed the first year and were not made aware until our neighbours received a bill out of the blue and asked us what it was and if we had one. We ended up paying for two years and a small penalty @ the land registry offices in Gazimugasa.

Responsibility has since been transferred and is now all dealt locally in Yeni Erenkoy by the council.

If you get winter fuel allowance in the UK then you will get it in Cyprus, that should help.

I live in a community of Cypriot and Turkish families and none have mentioned paying a second charge just the land tax.

Perhaps thats because you live in Magusa?

There seems to be a lot of confusion about 'council tax'. There are 2 kinds of charges here. One is property tax which is charged annually, although it can be paid in 2 installments, at the rate of 1TL per sq. metre of your house or 1.25TL per square metre if you have a pool. The other charges are made by the beldiye for water, street lighting, rubbish collection and insect spraying. The way these are collected varies from one belediye to another. In Lapta, the charges are added on to the monthly water bill but in Alsancak, for instance, they appear on the water bill as an annual charge, the payment of which can be spread over several months. You can identify these charges by the following: emlak vergisi: property tax. Diger Borc: insect spraying. Temizlik: rubbish collection. Aydinlatma: street lighting. Su Bedeli: water. All of these charges appear automatically except property tax - you should take your contract or kocan to the belediye to register this.

Thank you so much nostradamus, BRILLIANT, you have probably put several peoples minds at rest!

I live in çatalkoy and I've just checked my "water bill" and all the above charges are listed on it.

I thought I was paying 23TL a month for water but it's only 7TL the rest covers all the other bits!

That just proves ignorance is bliss! I was quite happy paying 23TL for my water every month and never bothered reading the bill!!
