As far as I am aware the authorities in the south won't allow ANY hire car from the north in. From the south the authorities here will allow a south hire car in provided insurance has been purchased. However, some south hire companies won't allow their card to be brought over here, other do (e.g. Avis). Geoff Famagusta City

we go over every now and again with cars hired from A.one . it costs 25Euro for the insurance for a month. A.one give us the paper work that we need to show at the border and we have never had a problem. We used to hire from the south and also never had a problem coming over but the insurance is slightly dearer. Liz

HI Yes you definately can bring a Southern Hire Car to the North, Prior to buying a car in the North last year we used Fontaine many times, I believe they advertise on 44. Friends of ours used them last Ocotober and the company are always aware that the cars are for use in the North. Very good service also with pick up/drop off at Larnaca. Message 4 re Eva Renta car, they must have changed their policy since last year everybody uses them in our complex, excellent company but brothers who own the company would never let you go to the South, Hope this helps

Message 5: you're well out of date with this one! It's up to the individual hire companies in the north whether or not they allow their cars to cross the border. Most of them now do but check because you will obviously need the apprpriate paperwork if you are going over.

Thanks all... I've done south to north - but not for a long while so knowing what inflation is like, I figured insurance would be more than it was 4 years ago! Thanks again...

Just been down to the border and enquired of the British SBA border police about it. They tell me their instructions are not to allow any hire car from the north accross. Maybe it depends who is on duty?? Geoff Famagusta City

I drove over today, South to North in a hire car from Fontana that i picked up at Paphos airport. There were no problems at all doing this. The polite young woman at the passport checkpoint sent me over the road to buy insurance, which I did (3 days for €20), then when I had the cover note gave me my visa. The whole process took less than 10 minutes. I checked with Fontana about doing this when i booked the car and was told it was no problem. However, if the car needs recovered back to the South for any reason (breakdown or accident) I'd have to arrange and pay for that myself.
