went for blood test last week and was given a TB jab at the same time, apparently it's standard!? However, I've had a very sore red lump on my arm where the jab was administered ever since. Is this normal and how long should it last for?

Told to pick up the report on Monday.

I presume I had one as a child. The woman who took the bloods said she was giving us a TB jab which was just standard when having the blood test for work permit application.

Martin, I haven't a clue what you're talking about so the answer must be no!!

Pippie,

I would guess one of two things either he was taking the mick or the post was not relevant which most of Mr Negatives aren't

Debbie hi!

TB jabs are now given instead of having an x-ray. You only really need to have this test if you are working in catering and not for a normal work permit. You should go back to the hospital if you have a reaction after 2 days and they will check it out for you.

Hope this helps!

Sue

From memory (and it's a really long time ago) if you get a reaction, it's a positive sign, the vaccination is working. A small ulcer can form and it's supposed to eventually heal over. My mother had a severe reaction to the TB jab, so I'd keep an eye on it and get help if it gets any worse.

Pippie; are you sure you had an actual injection ,not a "6 prick" Heaf/Mantoux test......because,,,one would normally have a "Skin reaction Test" first, and an ex-ray based on the results of the skin test .........I have never heard of giving an adult from the UK, who has almost certainly been Vaccinated in childhood a TB jab ,as a precautionary measure......It makes no sense ..It's not Tetanus ( were a Booster jab is recommended) Anyway..I wish you Well and hope all is OK

When I went for my blood test at the lab opposite the mercedes garage in girne, they gave me a proper jab too. I was surprised as I thought you only had a TB jab on the first year of your immigration application. They said it was standard for immigration blood tests. Mine went a bit red at first but was fine after a week. Dont scratch it!!!

MartD42, Ours in January was a 'proper TB jab' and told the same as Mags111. I dont understand either why we are jabbed each year? My worry was we dont know whats being stuck in our arm!! The syringe was all ready sitting in a stand ie not prepared before hand. Maybe Nurseawful can explain if she picks this up.

Hi, Mrs S.............I'm with you on this one...As you may remember my wife is a Senior Staff nurse,She had to have a skin test for TB every year..But "most definitely not" a BCG Injection...She reckons the hole approach to TB here is VERY SCARY..........Her words not mine........ say hi to Barry

Mags111 no, did not go there. It was the Lab that is red outside and just up the Zeytinlik road from the water fountain on the right past Bektas supermarket. What happens if we refuse to have the TB jab I wonder!

I think we should find out what exactly the are giving us .a "Skin Reaction Test"(Mantoux) or a full BCG injection.......If it's the latter ,I'm off!!..........

Thanks for all your comments.

I went to the Private Girne Hospital, was told there it was standard.

Turns out I was worrying unnecessarily. A reaction is normal, it's the size and redness that determines if there's a problem.

No problem afterall!

A 'reaction' - must be a Mantoux or Heaf test then - just checking your immunity status or any sign of 'active' TB going on in your body and therefore a risk of infecting the population

However who on earth would allow an unmarked syringe and its contents to be injected into their body without knowing what it was?? or just as importantly not seeing it being prepared and under what conditions.

Beggars belief.

msg 2. Got to agree .

Unless things have changed the injection IF required should protect for at least ten years and you would only need a booster if in contact with a person or persons who actually have TB. I have never known anyone to have the injection without first having a heaf /mantoux test

I have got to agree with message 26. What they are doing is a dangerous practise, and I for one would definitely refuse to have the jab, until after the heaf / mantoux test was done.

I had one in 2003 because one of my nurses had TB. It took 6 months for the scar to heal.

If the Heaf/Mantoux test is done, and shows a contraction of TB...the only cause of action is a rather unpleasant course of "Specific Antibiotics",,( Rimactazid, Ethambutol, and Pyrozinamide)which have to be taken in a set combination for anything up to a Year..in other words chemotherapy ....TB is on the increase world wide and many strains are AB resistant .....It is a Notifiable disease and must be taken Very seriously.
