Ismet Great article This as always been at the forefront of my mind . If we/Europe do not embrace Turkey . We will have great problems. Yergozlu the only hurdle as you say . This is a non entity on the bigger scale of things. Cyprus does not and never will control its own destiny

Oh my God. My friend Kickobullikostakis and his band merry mercenaries will not like this article one bit. In fact they don't like the reporter either, but never mind, you can't please everybody all the time. At least they have DT to supply them with all the whiskey to drown their sorrows and face another day over in the free areas and wait for the power to change in the Turkish lands. Make mine weee double. I can't take all this excitement no more, I am moving south to where all the miserable ones live. It can't be easy waiting for Turkey o collapse from within.

"If not, then many of us will find it increasingly difficult to see Europe as anything more than a glorified customs union with political ambitions that are far too big for its boots." I am sorry this has what the EU is now an unelected set of pen pushers on a never ending gravy train Turkey needs to keep friendly and keep out . The EU population is ageing and unproductive whereas Turkey has a growing young and vibrant population

The former editor of the Economist, has stated that many in Europe vision a larger goal, which is to incorporate the middle eastern countries that border the mediteranean. This would include Tunisia, Libya, Morocco and Egypyt. Extended financial help (with travel restrictions) to these countries could prevent economic migrants swamping European shores. This could only be achieved by Turkey being able to join the EU.

msge 12 Hiya Paul Expanding the EU to Frances former colonies might soften Frances attitude towards Turkey. I am sure Germany would take a lot more convincing though. By the way, has anyone heard recently from our glorıous leader the eminent Herman Van Rompuy, the leader of 500 million people. I do expect a rousing and influential speech at least once a year from him, if only to keep me going. Surely not much to ask for, for his 290,000 Euros a year salary.

Good link Ismet "As an EU member, Turkey would add a new dimension of massive historic importance. Europeans would show that we could embrace an Islamic democracy and build a strong bridge between Europe and Western Asia. That, in turn, would create a new European identity and narrative, a new reason for the EU to exist in this century, a way of rejecting the divisive politics of old. I hope that by the time I take up my pen again, we will be on our way to this destination. If not, then many of us will find it increasingly difficult to see Europe as anything more than a glorified customs union with political ambitions that are far too big for its boots" This is so true...

Worth noting the Turkish people want their leaders to pull the finger out over EU membership: >>More than 100 nongovernmental organizations, including Turkey’s main business associations and trade unions, joined forces on Friday to call on politicians to revive Turkey’s stalled European Union membership process after the upcoming parliamentary elections on June 12, saying the current stalemate is worrying... The NGOs lamented Turkey’s EU membership appeared to have ceased to become a matter of priority for both the Turkish and EU sides. “For us, EU membership means sustainable development, higher democratic standards, individual freedoms, gender equality and welfare society. Temporary political and economic developments in Turkey or in the EU cannot change this fact,” they said in the statement...<< http://www.todayszaman.com/news-241772-ngos-call-on-politicians-to-revive-eu-process-after-elections.html

>>Turkey Excluded From EU's 2014-2020 Budget Plans Turkey has been excluded from the draft EU budget plans for the 2014 - 2020 period. Because new members of the EU are entitled to special payments for the first few years after joining, it is customary to include candidate countries that are expected to join in the near future. Croatia, for example, currently a candidate country, has been included in the budget. But Turkey has not been, despite diplomatic pressure from Ankara. This is interpreted as a sign that Turkey is not likely to join the EU within the next few years, although it does not strictly preclude Turkey from joining before 2020.<< Perhaps if Turkey stopped being a regional bully and honoured her obligations over Cyprus her EU dreams might come true. http://www.hurriyetdailynews.com/n.php?n=turkish-membership-is-off-the-radar-screen-of-eu-until-2020-2011-04-20

Zoots; Who told you Turkey and her people want to join in Europe??? I Participate in a lot of comments in Milliyet and Hürriyet newspapers (online) related to Turkey and EU membership. I AM YET TO SEE ONE POST IN FAVOR OF JOINING THE EU! Interesting link BUT; If Turkey was economically and militarily poor, I doubt the article presented would have ever existed. Realizing what a valuable asset Turkey's current strong economy and military power can be, this is nothing more than "a..e licking" and an attempt to convince the others, while pretending to do Turkey a favor. This at a time when Portuguese, Greek, and some other EU members' economy are in tatters. Not to mention the financial burden on the economically better off of the members who are having to pay a fortune to bail them out! The above being the case, does Turkey want to be a part of the ailing EU, and perhaps subsidize Greek economy? They should spend the money and buy the Greek islands up for sale in the Aegean instead!
