Heard today that the Cyprus Papers are saying that you must no have a gap between your letters and numbers on car number plates is this true.

We heard there is a 180 ytl fine if you are caught, this came in to law on 1st April.

Would like to know if it is true as we see a few people having there number plates changed so no gaps.

Taxi driver told us he was pull up by police and fined yesterday.

PS I have just contacted a poice officer from Guzelyurt MOT office. Apparently it is no longer necessary to change your number plates as yrys88 states in message 2 above.

I have just heard on the news on my way to change my plates. The Minister for the Interior joined a TV programme by telephone and said that ordinary number plates need not be changed and the fines will be cancelled. No comment about those who already changed their plates.

so it seems that the new rules will apply to new number plates and in time all will conform. I measured mine today and the letter "C" was two millimiters too wide and the gap between letters was only 3 mm. but they should be 13mm.

So once again, the Banana Republic acted again

Msg 12 does that not make it difficult for the speed cameras to read?

phil,

Their problem is taking proper pictures of the driver. I had a letter today from a reader of C44. He went to the police station in Nicosia to have a look at those pictures. Two were taken from the back and no sign of the driver, three were taken from the front but only one hand of the driver showing and in the other two pictures the sun was shining and thus the driver not shown. Thus in five pictures out of five none showed the driver.

Now we know why the police is not so keen in showing these pictures. I can recommend them a better photographer

ismet, now I'm really confused. My TC friend just rang me to warn me to get my new plates, as the police were stopping drivers today in Lefcosia.

The TV cameras were there at the number plate place. People were creating because the queues were so long, he queued for nearly two hours!!!!

The new number plates apparantly are even more difficult to read. There is no space between the letters and the numbers.

FF,

If you have too much money go and get yourself a new set of plates.

Here is another true story. My grocer is about 30. He took his car for MOT about ten days ago and he was told to change his number plates. So he had new ones and thus passed the test. This morning a policeman stopped him and said that he must change his number plates and also pay a fine, otherwise he will tow the car to the police station. Obviously he was up in arms. He ripped off his number plates and gave it to the policeman plus his driving licence. He said that soon he will be at the station. At the station the police insisted on a fine and he was adamant he would not pay it. He left in an uproar. This afternoon the police came to his shop and returned his plates and the licence and said that it was all a misunderstanding.

Ismet, believe me, I could do without any more expenditure at the moment.

I wonder what will happen to a yabanci in the same circumstances?

someone phoned me this morning and said EVERYONE must get new special reflective plates. 'What' i said, and all the poor number plate making men throw all the old material in the bin with no compensation. He then said it wa sonly 40tl to have them done. Only? I could get two lunches out for me and 'im downstairs for that. he then said it was a 450 TL fine. he said his plates were 6 years old and so must be replaced and someone who replaced theirs last year had to get new ones.

then when checking with someone else they said my plates were fine. Judging from the queues around a lot of money has changed hands today and a lot of time wasted. But what the heck is the truth. Was it an April Fool's day and do all the poilice know what the official line is. anyone else with any experiences ?

I've just been to Lapta Police Staton, and a very nice policeman who spoke English, came out and looked at my car number plate. Mine is a short oblong one, yellow with a red strip. He said it was fine. As it is 5 years old, it has no reflextion stuff on it, but as I said earlier, I know the camera's can pick it up because I've been done for speeding.

thanks flower Fairy and Stella. I have had further talks with friends today and it does seem a bit of a mess of misunderstanding as to what is required. I was also told that the Police had not really received instructions from the government so ..... well, enough said. Let's hope this gets ironed out and advertised before the week-end.

there seems to have been a bit of a panic, doesn't there, which has caused heartache and a few lira! thanks to Stella for pointing out that she has the same plates as I, sdo I reckon I am law abiding. so how did FF get on, and anyone else.

According to the TC newspapers, the following criteria must apply for new number plates:

Front number plate white/rear number plate yellow/characters black.

Both number plates should be outlined with a red strip and be able to be read at a distance of 40 metres.

Height of the characters and numbers: Not smaller than 7.6cm - not larger than 8.9cm.

Thickness of characters and numbers: Not thinner than 1.1cm - not thicker than 1.6cm.

Width of each character and number: Not less or more than 5.4cm.

Space between characters and numbers must be 1.3cm.

ALL characters and numbers should be 1.3cm from the outer edge of the number plate frame.

So, this appears to be the latest criteria for new number plates - but then again, we are only allowed to pick up family members at Ercan - aren't we?

This thread topic has just reminded me that I must buy a bunch of bananas at the supermarket! - I wonder why?

According to Havadis newspaper here are the relevant dimensions according to the new bylaw:

The hight of the leters and numbers to be between 7.6-8.9 cm

The width should be between 1.1-1.6 cm

Each letter or number must not be wider than 5.4 cm

The distance between adjacent letters or numbers must be 1.3 cm (interesting, a fixed number rather than a range, asking for trouble)

These plates must be easily readable from 40 metres distance (does not say by whom, hopefully not me without specs)

I didn't go to the police station because my Tc friend confirmed almost what Ismet said.

I'm going to chance my luck with mine, the car's only been here three years.

Looking on the bright side,As my friend said, if this is all we have to worry about, aren't we lucky.

Happy days, I hope,

That's only due to my reticence + the difference in 'Human Rights' afforded by your government, respectively!
