I have installed a UV system in the return line of my pool. This with warning sensor is garantied to kill all the nasty bacteria. However a small amout of Chlorine is still required to prevent Algea We maintain 0-0.5 ppm instead of the usual 1.5 plus. At this level chlorine is not apparent. Costs a bit but worth it. Sterilight unit GBP1250 inclding KDV Units with filters are also available for drinking water. Brochures availble if anyone is interested. Many Pool companies not keen as it reduces Chlorine sales 0532 340 2230 or 053 850 7517

Hi John, UV is a good way to treat water without chemicals. However, UV leaves no residual when it switches off, as it does when the swimming pool pump stops and the water ceases to circulate past the UV source. This means sterilization stops with the pump and doesn't resume until the pump starts again. Chlorine is a more efficacious way to treat pool water as it leaves a residual dose which sterilizes continuously independently of the pump. Many people don't like chlorine so opt for Ionizers such as Aligator which also leave a residual of silver and copper, not chlorine, in the pool water which continues to provide sterilization after the pump stops. You actually need a small dose of chlorine to provide an oxidizer, without which pool water clarity will suffer. I think UV is more appropriate for treating drinking water as it is sterilized as it is drawn through the pipework.

As usual Vaughan raises vaulable points, a couple of further points worth noting UV tubes need to be changed after a certain number of hours use, as they loose their efficiency. Also with the hard water, the window where the UV light is exposed to the water needs to be kept clear of scale.
