Looking to buy a new phone while i am in UK but not sure which one to go for as i am sure that we will be limited because of the lack of wifi hotspots. If anyone is using these phones could you\please tell me which one you are using and what apps you are able to use.

How smart do you want it to be Teresa?

My Blackberry works fine in TRNC and does all I need.

Hi Teresa

I have the Iphone 4 and think its great. I have loads of apps and use a Turkcell sim card. I've got a package deal that gives me 300 minutes to Turkish and UK phones and 500MB 3G internet. I think it's about 70TL a month. All texts and additional minutes are charged on top of that. The 3G internet works better in Cyprus than it does in UK and the Google maps sat nav option is great for finding my way around both the north and the south side as well. The signal is strong enough to get me half way to Ikea before it cuts off. Other things I use it for are emails, camera, video, facetime (free video calls to other iphone 4 users), skype, calendar etc.

I had a HTC smartphone before I got the iphone and it was good but the iphone is just so simple and easy to use in comparison.

As breezyboy said, it really does depend what you'll be using it for.

If you are looking for a smartphone at the cheaper end of the spectrum then have a look at the Orange San Fransico. It can be bought in the UK for around 80-90 pounds, can be easily unlocked to work on any network (without having to pay to have it done). It comes with android 2.1 operating system but can be upgraded to 2.2 using user made custom roms. Of course it is not as powerful as the high end phones that cost 400-500 pounds but then it is only 90 pounds. As for apps, any app that is not region based (like say spotify or BBC iplayer) that the phone can support will work in the TRNC, but you may have to pay data charges depending on the app used. It runs angry birds, so what more could you want ?

Review can be seen here

Though do note that it no longer comes with an AMOLED screen but a TFT one. It is in my view the current 'bargain' of smartphones in UK.

Hi coffer. What 2.3 rom are you using out of interest ? I got one of these phones for my partner whilst in the UK a few weeks ago and have upadated it to android 2.2

Did you try 2.2 yourself ? Do you think 2.3 is significantly better ? I was going to wait a bit before trying 2.3 but if you have tried it and it is stable then maybe ill give it a go now.

Hi Teresa - I like Android phones as they are not tied so heavily to one manufacturer.

Screen size and quality I like the Samsung Galaxy S

Duarbility (drop and wet resistant) go for the Motorola Defi

ended up buying a blackberry unlocked but according to turkcell they do not support blackberry here so apart from using it for normal calls and texts total waste of money and time unless anyone knows different then please let me know, Now got to wait for my son to come out and bring me an iphone.

Erolz and Coffer - are you using the Orange SF on Turkcell? Looks a great phone for that price so thinking of getting one when I'm back in the UK.

Yes susief, well my partner is using it on Turkcell, with a minutes package and a data package.

I unlocked the phone for free using an online source to get the code and I also flashed the phone to replace the orange modified android 2.1 OS and replace it with a generic android 2.2 OS. Again there is lots of info online on how to do this and if you needed help I am sure I could lend a hand.

I have to say I think its incredible value at around 90 pounds.

Teresa for some more info - http://www.samsung.com/uk/consumer/mobile-devices/smartphones/android/GT-I9000HKDXEU/index.idx?pagetype=prd_detail

As you know I like that phone mainly because it's not tied to the one source and the size of the screen is good.
