President Derviş Eroğlu has issued a detailed statement concerning yesterday’s protest action held by several labor unions from the trade union’s platform.

The President said that the anti-Turkey slogans and banners carried at the protest action did not reflect the views of the majority of the Cyprus Turkish people.

In a written statement issued today, the President said that the slogans and banners ranted at yesterday’s protest against the TRNC parliament, the state and motherland Turkey did not reflect the views of the majority of the Cyprus Turkish people.

Eroğlu invited everyone who loves their people and country to be realistic and to exercise common sense.

The President said that although the TRNC was a democratic country where people were free to express their views this did not give various circles the right to create chaos or anarchy.

He said that anyone who wanted to exercise the freedom of speech needed to take into consideration the views and interests of others living within society.

“You can’t create chaos or anarchy by saying that you are exercising your rights or freedoms. You can’t threaten the safety or the freedom of other segments of society” he added.

The President pointed out that yesterday’s protest action in front of the TRNC parliament had drawn reaction from a large section of the population.

“This is not democracy. Turkey is neither an occupier nor the Republic’s Assembly the puppet of the Turkish government. Such expressions do not reflect the historical realities in Cyprus or the rights and interests of the Cyprus Turkish people” he said.

President Derviş Eroğlu also said that the Cyprus Turkish people were moving forward thanks to the support and assistance of Turkey despite the international isolations imposed by the international community as well as the Greek-Greek Cypriot duo’s preventative efforts.

And he should know, being in such close contact with his people! He told me I could vote three years ago at a public meeting at the Pia Bella Hotel. I'm still waiting!
