I've just been asked an interesting question.

A friend is coming out to TRNC for the first time and has asked me if he can get Travellers Cheques cashed easily. I said of course, the exchange bureaus should do it. But since I put the phone down I've been thinking, I don't think I've ever seen them advertised in the bureaus. So I've got to ask what might sound like a silly question. Can you get Travellers Cheques exchanged in the exchange bureaus? And, if so, is that the best place for the best exchange rates?

Thanks.

As a business owner we don't take them as it is so hard to get them cashed and if you can it usually takes over a month to get the money. Though last year I was given what worked as a credit card but was actually the new form of travellers cheque and it went through my visa machine with no problem. Ask your firend if she can get that card and she shouldn't have any problems.

My friends were changing them in the south... so not a TRNC scam.

We used to bring TCs with us and always cashed them at the exchange bureau in the pedestrianised street in the centre of Girne, the one on the left going down from the municipal car park before the opticians. We weren't charged commission, but understandably got a different exchange rate than cash. The biggest pain is if you want to pay for something and don't have enough cash, if you take sterling you can pay in sterling as you know and it's so much easier. We always bring cash now.

The bureau de change at the airports now sell a debit card instaed of trav. cheques. They are free you pay a per transaction fee like private cash machines but it is the same fee for any amount and only a small fee at that. They give you a pin number with each card.
