Speaking during the visit, President Dervis Eroglu praised the delegation for the work that they have carried out and expressed his belief that their workings will be accelerated after today’s meeting. Pointing to the importance of promoting the beauties of the TRNC, Eroglu expressed the belief that this year will be a better year for the TRNC tourism sector. ‘Even though the TRNC is under travel embargoes; thanks to the efforts of Turkey’s Tourism and Travel Agents Union we have been able to bring tourists to the country’ said the President.

I'm afraid Mr. Eroğlu was informed by his Minister of Tourism (is it the same "Minister of Tourism" as yesterday..?!) and forgot to communicate the real figures and facts with the TRNC tourism sector. How sad that message nr. 4 jokingly describes the plain truth during the past 6-7 years.

@ msg 6, newlad: Thanks, Paul. Let's hope the new "Minister of Tourism" (will it be the same one tomorrow as the one today..?!) will not only speak Turkish but some English also. A former and very recent "Minister of Tourism" came back from an important tourism fair in the UK and had his interpreter state only days later that he, the "Minister of Tourism", unfortunately couldn't speak English (during a book presentation in English in Karaman for an almost complete British audience...). No, I'm not laughing. I'm sad to write the truth.

@ msg 8, newlad: No, he can't - he's already gone (after predicting 100.000 or 1.000.000 imaginary tourists for some imaginary year). Let's face it: the truth is in message 4.

Msg 6.... There is no real need for the Minister to speak English, as I feel sure his wife or cousin(s) could make themselves understood when ordering from the Al la Carte menu that (and every other) evening. And I am certain that taxi, champange and room service are all part of the universal language. Michael

@ msg 13, keithr: Let's stick to facts and figures: "flying here via Turkey" are Turkish Airlines, Pegasus, Corendon and shortly AnadoluJet (the budget daughter of Turkish Airlines). Just for the record.

The trouble is North Cyprus is not only competing with the rest of Europe for tourists - but also Turkey. Only this week travel zoo have a weeks all inclusive break in a 5 star hotel for £299.00. More and more people are looking for all inclusive holidays so they know how to budget. To many Northern Cyprus is an unknown, and are often put of by two take offs and landings with lots of uncertainties. This can be coupled by many looking at forums like this and put off by the negatives that are posted. I have heard loads of promises over the past 15 years. None have ever happened!!! I would love the country to be really successful, I love the place there is nowhere like it. But I fear it's gong to be a huge task bringing in the numbers.
