Every time I travel on the 'motorway' from Girne to Lefkosa, the *little yellow train reminds me of some epic train journeys I have taken in my misspent life! Previously, I posted the classic song, the original recording studio version, sung by Arlo Guthrie. There were always imitators, including Willie Nelson - however, I do like his version, even though I suspect he rather rushed the recording and didn't quite get it right - well, as far as I'm concerned! Anyway, have a listen.....all comments gratefully received! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0sRdwQj8h6E&feature=related P.S. * If they'd painted the little train blue, instead of yellow, it would look 'Thomas The Tank Engine's' double!

Lem - thanks for that. Reminds me of family holidays on the IOW in the mid-60's. Hope all is well with you? J x

That is a delightful, albeit saddening, film clip, 'Lemtich' - thanks for posting it.

'DoctorW': I'm glad you brought this thread back 'on topic'! It was my hope and intention for this to happen; so, viewers of your 'link' have brought this to fruition and, no doubt, if previously unaware of the history of the Cyprus railway system, will have thoroughly enjoyed and been fascinated by the subject matter contained in the three episodes!

As a railway enthusiast and a keen walker, I will put aside time to follow the route of the old railway, as much as possible. I will now search out more info on the railway as I am as fascinated by industrial history as much as the medieval history which abounds in Cyprus.

If you take, for example, the 'Temple of Aphrodite' at Koukla/Kouklia, the reason that it is no longer, apart from the ravages of time, intact, is that a sugar cane mill was constructed from it's stones. Any stones, or blocks, that could be lifted, were misappropriated. This is what has happened in so many cases in Cyprus [and elsewhere] - it was/is too convenient not to do so! I'm afraid many of the structures used to build the Cyprus railway system have suffered the same fate..... However, good luck with your quest!

Perhaps its fitting that many of the structures of the railway have been robbed, I'm sure that some of the railway structures were themselves built of 'robbed' stone from elsewhere. The youtube videos stated that the line was traceable for much of the route, but I'm sure that since the 1970's much of this has disappeared. It will mean finding old railway maps from the 50's and overlaying them on current maps. This would be relatively simple in the UK with the standard of mapping, but I am unsure whether there are any recent OS quality maps available for TRNC.
