Msg 1:Excellent, but my Panorama photo taken with my brownie box camera Model 127 in black and white in 1957 is better (in my opinion ) as a).The harbour is not cluttered up with too many boats.b).The history of the scene shown is there for all to see.

@ msg 6, Roley: If you upload your picture from 1957 I'll reply with a picture from Kyrenia harbour dated 1878 - the first Kyrenia harbour photograph in history (taken by a British photographer). Hardly any boats at all and only history... To be honest: I think you can only compare the quality of photographs when they are taken on (almost) the same spot and date and under (almost) the same circumstances.

Msg:7 and Msg 9:I will consult my computer expert and will advise shortly.Hans the oldest photographs i have seen showed Kyrenia harbour having a small beach and ladies wearing bonnets and Victorian dresses playing with their children.I will check out these photographs this weekend and the date they were taken ,which is shown, and report back.Hans i would agree with you that to compare photographs the same (or simular) circumstances need to apply.

@ msg 12, Roley: When the British Empire leased Cyprus from the Ottoman Sultanate (1878, an interesting and complicated story but not relevant here) imo some very important decisions were made. First of all a certain Captain H.H. Kitchener (later Lord Kitchener) was ordered to map Cyprus - the result is still stunning and impressive. Secondly a photographer (I'll find his name in my archive later) was ordered to photograph daily life in Cyprus. Again, a stunning and impressive series! There are more than 130 years between the picture in my message # 1 and the two pictures I'll show you now (a present from my Cypriot Turkish friend M.) - I hope you'll all enjoy. Remember the pics next time you walk in Kyrenias ancient harbour..! ▶ [ http://is.gd/udVNbn/Kyrenia_in_1878 ].

Enjoyed the fabulous panorama, but being keen on history, I loved the old ones even more, hope we can see more of them. I suspect you got lots squirreled away in your archive.

Re : Msg16, DearDC, Thank you for the pictures, how very intriguing! It is interesting to see that the general shabbiness and neglect were in vogue in 1878 too. Clarissa

Re : Msg 29, Yes, I would like to see Roley's picture too. Dear DC, I think it would be also nice if we could have a link in this thread to the engraving of Kyrenia Castle and Harbour in 1879 by Tristram Ellis . What do you think?

@ msg 30, Clarissa2: I agree, but this is all I can find in my site at the moment: "ELLIS, Tristram James - Thirteen Etchings of the views & places of interest in Cyprus. London, 1879. This is the whole collection of thirteen plates etched by Ellis, all in frames. 4 frames by 3 plates each and another smaller with a girl weaving. The Ellis work is considered the first work by a famous artist depicting people and places after the 1878 annexation of Cyprus by the British. They are well executed in excellent contrast bearing the inscription Tristram Ellis, 1879. This is a very important and scarce work in a small edition. Ellis, an accomplished artist, visited Cyprus with the start of the British Administration." And this URL: ▶ [ http://www.allcrusades.com/bb_webpages_03/06_tristram_ellis/tekst.html ]. But not his Kyrenia etching..!

Re : Msg 31&32, DC, Thank you for uploading it. These days it is very difficult to find even the prints or images of Ellis's engravings - they are all in private collections.

Fascinating pictures Hans.....many thanks for sharing them with us. Excuse my ignorance but in the 1950 picture it shows the harbour at low tide, do we not get a low tide anymore or has the water level been "engineered" to stay high ?
