| Hi everyone. I am looking for English people who might have time to help the turkish students (or students from other countries) with their conversational English. No teaching ability is required just a genuine interest in letting the students practice their newly acquired english language skills conversationally. Generally these students in their daily lives have no access to hearing the English language being spoken in a social setting. It is not necessary to correct their English as this is the job of the English teachers but being encouraging and offering praise will boost their confidence. Help at lunchtimes and evenings would be great - as it is voluntary, any time you can spare would be appreciated. Please reply to me on this board or contact me on:0533 845 9814. | That's just typical of GAU! Get rid of trained, native speaker faculty teachers in English and replace them with VOLUNTEERS! Just because GAU don't want to pay taxes doesn't mean the students have to suffer! GAU should get its priorites for teaching correct. Bet they don't mention teaching by vounteers on thier website or prospectus! And to really blow the lid on the place..... Teachers are paid TWICE a month once on the 1st then the 15th. The first payment is in YTL, (1060), the second in Euros (varies due to exchange rate). All contracts state teachers are paid minimum wage of 1060YTL a month. But that's only to satisfy the taxman. Where in actuality they are paid a minimum of 1800YTL after the Euros have been converted. They can't/don't even pay the 14% taxes due on the 1060YTL, never mind taxes that would be due on the 'extra' payment on the 15th. As with most companies in the TRNC, Tax Evasion is rife. No wonder the countries got no infastructure. |

Timothy In the past I have heard similar and worse from ex GAU employees. The stories I have in heard may not be true but I know the people very well and believe them to be very trustworthy. I hate to think that any company or employer should not be trusted but we all know that it is sometimes the case that they are not trustable. I am sure that Brenda is seeing a better side of GAU and I hope that it has moved on so that the students are now getting the best possible education from a happy faculty.

Pike... The NC Media were informed at the beginning of September when the "we won't be renewing your work visas and your services are no longer required" notices went out. The beans were spilled. But no newspaper decided to get back to us for a formal interview or to confirm what we were saying was true or false. When 2 of the now redundant teachers approached the tax office about some unemployment benefits they were told that none were payable as their tax records were "incomplete." If they were complete they could have had help. They also saw that in August new applications for work permits had been submitted to the Works Department. These were refused due to incomplete taxes paid for them. So that is why GAU decided that they weren't wanted. Once out they didn't have to pay any taxes. Ruffeling the wrong feathers of the Untouchables in the Ivory Tower of GAU could cause the newspapers more harm than good. The place is a den of corruption......

It's the only place I know that gives out degrees to students who can barely string an English sentence together, on a course that was taught, suppossedly, in English. Bur then again.....There's another bug bear! Courses in English! They proudly boast. But most are taught in Turkish if the class is made up of Turkish majority teachers. Even some of the lecturers can't speak English who are suppossed to be teaching in English! As long as they've got your money in theor bank account your education can goto hell. They just don't give a toss. Those who complain have the usual shrug of shoulders and told they can leave if they wish.

Thanks to all of you for your replies. My humble apologies for making the unforegiveable mistake of saying English people! My hubby (a true Scotsman!) has threatened to take me to the race relations people! Just to clarify, it is not teaching English just conversational English outwith the classroom. I have also met some very good teachers at the Uni. Thanks and regards

Hi all. Thanks for the replies - I did not realise the thread was still live (my fault). Just to let everyone know that this project did not, in the end, go ahead at the University owing to organisational problems. Regards

Just to say I am closing this thread. It appears the university is no longer implementing the project and I'm sure Scotslassie will inform us if they need support in the future. Kind Regards Bradus
