I must say I think the celebrations in America as shown on the BBC are crass stupidity and they should look to their Worldwide activities for an answer as to why Al-Qaeda exists and is seemingly so popular with the disaffected in the middle-east etc.

Agree Groucho but it is understanable. The Americans had to watch, on TV, the celebrations taking place in Moslem countries after 9/11. Bin Laden was not in a tank. He was caught in a compound in Pakistan and he, along with three others, were killed by an army unit. One of the others killed is believed to be his son. His body is in American custody and Mr Obama has said he will be treated in Muslim custom.

Message 13, exactly, its not known yet if its 100% him, they are now discussing the shape of his nose, but then photos we have always seen of this man are now over 10 years old so nothing to compare with and it will be dealt with by facial recognition and DNA. Message 11. Not sure what President Obama has in mind but it has now been mentioned he could be buried at sea, that it not Muslim custom.

Msg9, Groucho, totally agree. I'm glad he can't personally cause any more death and destruction but Al Quaeda still exists and still can. Watch what happens next though, he was in Pakistan and the US did this without sharing any intelligence with the pakistani government if the news reports are correct. There will be a backlash of some kind I'm sure.

@msg 9, the man responsible for the defining tragedy of a generation has been killed. How do you propose America should react to such shocking news, and why do you think your own country would be any different? Yes, America's international behaviour could use some modification, and celebrating death is always crass, but 3000 people died on September 11 and this is at least a tiny bit of closure for some. But I guess it's easier and more fashionable to bash America's goverment and people than attempt to understand others' emotions in the heat of the moment. As for Al Qaeda, they wanted to terrorize America last week, they still want to this week. It's not like they were unmotivated before. Nobody expected Bin Laden's death to end terrorism, and Im sure the world's security forces are well aware there may be attempted attacks and will do what they do to stop them.

Just seen on the news that the photograph been given is not a real photo!! They've used an old photograph of Laden and replace on a dead body with photoshop! http://www.hurriyet.com.tr/planet/17686422.asp?gid=381 link is in Turkish ( some members will understand ) but will be enough just to see the photographs.

I wonder who scored for the ten million dollars reward money that was being offered for information leading to Bin's 'capture' - could it have been the poor little guy who cleaned the 'bogs' at the Bin Laden mansion? - Ten mil. is quite an incentive to 'dob in' even your best cobber! The question is: how much has it cost the US/UK taxpayers to chase this elusive devil? And don't forget to add the coupla three billion the Yanks have doled out to the Pakis. for 'help'! What a 'crock of sh1t' this whole business is - and I'm way from convinced that we're all not being thoroughly lied to by the media - who, in turn, have been 'slightly misinformed' by US authorities!

The real question is are you people real. No matter what a man has done, he is innocent till proven guilty in a court of law. USA being judge jury and executioner is legally and morally wrong. Dumping an executed body to the sea instead of giving him back to his relatives to bury him and morn is beyond belief. Has this ever been done before? And these people call themselves Christians. JESUS! The president and the rest of his butchers sitting down and watching the killing of this man and his family are beyond belief. Even Hillary Clinton looks shocked. Take not that this is the best advert for Al-Qaida, and it will radicalize thousands to join their ranks. The new breed of these fighters will be more ferocious then ever before and they will be after blood. There is only one solution,USA should stop interfering in these people countries. When they do , this problem will be solved.

I agree with Fred. International assassinations instead of detention and trial is uncivilised and barbaric. It is resorting to the level of the terrorist. They just wanted him out of the picture. Unfortunately the whole truth is unlikely to ever be shared. Sadly, the US never seems to learn how to behave with the rest of the world.

We now here that he was unarmed. This reminds me of the fantastic Roman civilization who went around civilizing the world and anybody they felt was too uncivilized was fed to the lions. Some civilization. When you behave like barbarians, you become them. You have lost the argument and war. The Turkish Government viewed Nazim Hikmet as a revolutionary and a terrorist and tried to kill him 5 times in the 50s to silence him. In the end he managed to escape to Russia and died there in 1963. His poems are still used in songs to this day. Some kind of silencing that was. Bin Laden will be no different. He murder will be used to radicalize people for decades.

Even though we both speak the same language, it's amazing how there are some subtle differences between American-English and proper English: They say "sidewalk" we say "pavement" They say "pants" we say "trousers" They say "buried at sea" we say "naked and chained to a metal bed frame with a car battery connected to his bollocks whilst being beaten for answers".

Don't be silly Esentepegal, 1. Americans cannot speak English 2. When they want a few nails pulled, they send their captives to Morocco or Egypt for their guard dogs will do it for them, despite the fact that they wrote the book on torture techniques.

msge 66 I am sorry that you have lost your leader yfred. It must have been a difficult decision whether to take him dead or alive. One obvious outcome of an incarcerated bin laden, is that you could expect many Western hostages to be taken in return for bin ladens release. You are right, many will join al-qaidas cause, but they would do so either way, whether he was taken dead or alive. Al-qaida would have formed regardless of what the US does, although the US has given them a credible rationale. Bin laden harked back to the the ancient battles that took place between Christendom and Islam. He's ultimate goal was to put Islam back at the top of the pecking order and he was prepared to use any means necessary. A violent man met a violent death. It is interesting that many in the muslim world now see al-qaida as simply destructive and do not offer a viable solution. The Arab spring may show, that many want a more western form of governance, not al-qaidas.

President Obama has said that the world is a safer place now that Bin Laden is dead, I doubt that very much. Seeing the Americans dancing in the street to celebrate and the fact that it appears he was not given a proper burial according to his religion makes me think that there will be plenty of groups ready and willing to avenge his death, safer, I don't think so.

msge 74 "President Obama has said that the world is a safer place now that Bin Laden is dead, I doubt that very much" I doubt it too. Al-qaudi probably has a very sophisticated distributed leadership system. It will be interesting to see if the US can cut off its money supply, through the documents they captured.
