The EU has just blocked our access to many herbal medicines, and already some household remedies are being taken off the shelves. A new EU Directive came into force this week that erects high barriers to any herbal remedy that hasn't been on the market for 30 years -- including virtually all Chinese, Ayurvedic, and African traditional medicine. The EU Commission itself has recognised this is an over-regulation that will needlessly restrict consumer choice, but has done nothing to change it. http://www.avaaz.org/en/eu_herbal_medicine_ban/?cl=1047906110&v=9014 Please sign the petition ...

What has this got to do with the TRNC may I ask? As this article is to do with the EU surely it is irrelevant for the TRNC as it is not in (and maybe never will be). Pointless!

There are a great number of EU citizens residng here or who up to now have been using herbal remedıes and supplements and are not aware of what ıs currently happening regarding this subject. Your comment was pointless and rude Peter!

Anybody who has signed Avaaz Org. petitions in the past should have received notification of this latest 'Herbal Remedy' proposed ban by EU, warning. I signed it because many herbal remedies have cured people with various ailments for millenia, so why should they suddenly be classed as placebos now - what nonsense! Nobody is denying there is plenty of 'snake-oil' on offer, online, and elsewhere. Obviously, a lot of money has, shall we say, 'changed hands', for Brussels to want to initiate this repressive type of legislation - TRNC is not the only culprit of corruption in high places - the mind can only boggle at what nefarious 'goings on' are happening elsewhere in EU! And beyond, of course - but this topic concerns EU!

I agree in principle with msg 1 but a ban on some of the chinese and african medicines would go some way to stop the slaughter of animals for these so called cures.

Of course, you are quite right, 'Deniz 1' - the problem of policing, or catching the culprits, of rare animal slaughter seems, up to now, unsurmountable. It also seems impossible to change the mindset of these [mostly Oriental] people that believe certain animal body parts to be either an aphrodisiac, or miracle cure.

Thank you for bringing this to my attention having read in depth on some of the effects caused by manufactured drugs and witnessed them, people should have the choice on whether to take the drugs and risk the side effects or go for a less harsh alternative. The pharmaceutical industry is by far one of the largest and most buoyant industry’s alive today they wield a scary amount of control and power through so many avenues and this ban is criminal and monopolizing withdrawing our rights to choose what we think is best for our own health
