I now have my Kindle and decided to download a load of free books from a torrent, I have checked and they are for Kindles, however I cannot get them to work on my Kindle.

I have connected my Kindle to my laptop and dragged the book from my laptop into the 'documents' folder on my Kindle but it doesn't appear on my Kindle.

What am I doing wrong please?

It is probably down to formats at a guess. The kindle does not support the epub format, which is one of the major ebook formats around. If the files you are dragging accross have a file extension ( the part after the . in the filename) of .epub than that is the problem.

If the files are in epuib format and do not have DRM (digital rights management) on them , then you can convert them from epub format that the kindle does not support to a format it does support to Mobipocket format that the Kindle can read. There are many programs than can do this conversion but probably the best is the free Calibre (which does a whole lot more as well)

with calibre ....download and set that up as your library holder

when you drag book into calibre you can change the format easily when you see the tool bar

when in the correct format as erol says you can then plug in kindle and load

i have a book flood disc with 10000 books on you can buy or copy these if you know somebody

Thank you Kav, will do as you suggested, it came down with an instruction book so shouldn't be too difficult (ha ha) and thank you re: the extra books, I may well come back to you once I get myself sorted out.

Thank you Erolz and Kav,

I am chuffed with myself at the mo as I have managed to download the calibre software, download 966 books and converted them all and got them onto my new Kindle which is quite an achievement for someone who really is not computer literate.

Thanks!
