Hi, you can't take a TC hire car over the checkpoints but you could try a bus/taxi/dolmus to Nicosia then the same to Limassol. Time spent fixing this obviously affects travel time. Generally better to fly into the south and hire a car there, which you can drive on both sides of the island. Flights into the south are also cheaper, quicker and have better times.

try http://www.cyprus-car.com they allow cars north/south, make sure you take your UK driving licence with you, possibly you may have to pay 3rd party insurance at the border so be aware of opening times of insurance office at the border. I am sure hire company will explain everything.

I've taken hired cars from both sides back and forth,it's just a case of finding a hire company that allows it.

On trevor Mcdonalds TV program it said that Izzet Zorlu, who also owns this or part of this site helped/owned or instigated for a hire car company to be accepted to go to the south. You should ask him. izzet@cyprus44.com

Tootie, Rules change all the time, you know that. It was never allowed in the past so I'd check carefully before attempting it. It's the RoC which decides who and what they allow in. Personally I always use a car from the other side on the other side and have a TC runabout for the north.

lilli, Good stuff but are people certain the RoC authorities allow this and may not turn around at random and stop someone? Can anybody point to when there was a change to the rules?

Lilli, Pacific Do not allow their cars south, however A One (Opp Altinkaya) and Oscars do allow their cars over and NEVER any problem at the Border, just as with bringing cars hired in the South, North, you are only covered for 3rd Party İnsurance.

Zoots I really don't not know when the rules changed but we have used Oscars for about 2 years to take a car over. Sorry I cant be specific. The R.O.C authorities do allow it as long as you buy the insurance. I beleive the car hire company also has to take out a separate insurance.

I am not sure are about rental cars, but I crossed the border several timer using my own car (TRNK registered). Last time I did it on Nowember 2010. It is a special custom for cars and it did not case any problem. The one thing you need having a Greek side insurance(obtaining here or on the border). I guess that it is the same situation for rentals, you can ask in any rental agency.

Message 2: you're well out of date with this one! It is up to the individual hire companies whether or not they alllow their vehicles over the border. Some that do have already been mentioned, others include Severners and Green Garage at Alsancak and, I believe, Bird in Karaoglanoglu. Just make sure you hire from one of the companies that allow it. I would thought that getting to Limassol by public transport would be a serious hassle.
