Gulet owners are still emptying their tanks and throwing rubbish close to shore. I went to Mosquito beach this afternoon and the sea was a mass of sewage and rubbish - absolutely disgusting. The tourist season has only just started, but what a filthy mess. Hard to believe the boats anchor there to allow their passengers to swim!

Did you take photos, 'spangles'?

DC, or his photographer friend did; and when I posted the 'link' [apologies if plaigiarism committed, DC!] on a recent topic, of this nauseatingly revealing and common scenario, I was bombarded with 'excuses'!

Tenakoutou - no I didn't have my camera or phone on me. I'm not sure I would have wanted a picture of it anyway - too grim.

Rigsby - not sure what is happening with the complex. There has been a minor "facelift" taking place - bar area re-roofed, pool emptied, cleaned and in the process of being refilled, gardens tidied etc. The place has fallen into such a bad state it is desperately needed, but it's only just scratching the surface. I think some of the chalets are still rented out on a long term basis. It is definitely not operating as a holiday resort at the moment

Thankyou, spangles. I used to talk to the former owner of the complex. Such a shame about the place going downhill.

What do is is ask the boatmen hassling you for trips at the old harbour what they do with their sewage and gash. If the reply is unsatisfactory tell them so then name and shame them here.

Msg 13, it's irrelevant whether its illegal or not to behave as the Gulet owners are doing. The long of short of it is, they shouldn't do it regardless.

I have been on several gulet trips and have never seen this, are you sure spangles that we can blame specific owners of gulets ? I am very surprised at this.

On a slightly related note, the other day I was down at Akdeniz beach taking a walk. After walking about half a mile of rubbish strewn beach from the sign proclaiming it an official Protected Turtle Nesting Area I came upon the carcass of an entire dead cow of somewhat significant size. So it's not only the gulet owners causing all the problems, though I have no doubt they're doing all they can to ignore any and all environmental regulations, just like everyone else.

The subject of 'clean seas' is a contentious one, whilst the majority of boat owners I hope are environmentally aware and do not discharge within at least 6 miles of the coast and preferably further I Know it does not happen.

It happens closer than that for the following reasons

1. The majority of boats do not have a holding tank

2. If they do there is no pump out facilities in North Cyprus

3. There are only a small handfull of boats that venture more than swimming distance from the shore.

I am in Goeck at the moment probably the most sensitive areas as regards to pollution in Turkey discharging here means at least a 2.5K euro fine.

But they have pump out facilities both in marinas and a barge that moves around the anchorages.

As regards rubish strewn on the beach, yes some of it is local but you must remeber there is a major trash line current just off the coast here that circulates clockwise a lot of the waste originates in Syria and Lebanon, rough weather brings it ashore

My family have two tour boats and i can assure everyone that we never dump rubbish at sea in fact we have been to beaches to anchor and then moved on if it is dirty. The dirty water is pumped out but we do that as far out as we can and away from beach areas. We need a good reputation to stay in business which is getting harder every year and we want to protect our lovely seas and countryside. Sorry to say there are a couple of boats that dont care.

Deniz1 (Msg 24) If you know there are 2 boats that are being stupid, unhygenic and downright disgraceful, can you and the other boat owners do something about it? Afterall, if there are only two as you say, they are painting you all with the same brush and therby giving you all a bad name. As making a living these days is difficult enough I would have thought these particular boats would be the first people you approached.

A thread like this on a well read Forum does all of you no good at all does it?

Just wondering, did you actually see a tour boat dumping rubbish and toilet waste, or did you assume it was from one of them. The boats normally make a trip out with no one on board to empty there tanks. If you saw one then this would be very disappointing.

Pugwash - message 20. On the rare occasions that I have been on our boat and followed the gulet route it becomes very obvious that the dumping is in the places where the gulets anchor i.e. escape beach, mosquito beach etc. and close to shore. I am talking raw sewage as well as general rubbish.

Yesterday I was on foot, but it was early afternoon after and shortly after the gulet had left. I can see the masts from home. There is one anchored there now as I type and I hope to goodness that none of their passengers has gone for a swim.

Deniz1 - thank you for your confirmation and concern.

Get the name and report them to the harbour master. Also there are health and hygene inspectors around most restaurants would have contact details. Ask the owners about insurance next time anyone goes on a boat trip dont accept the cyprus shrug ask to see the papers. Also life jackets where are they and how many? Many boats "borrow" them from each other. i am not coming over as a goody goody but when we obey the rules i get angry with those that dont.
