Good news for Turkey. Just been voted on to the UN Security Council. Just in aid alone, a country voted on has historicaly seen aid from the USA go up by 59%. It also raises Turkets profile and standng in the world and must ı would think ıncrease support and case for joining the EU.

This does sound positive. How long have they been in Nato with little courtesy afforded them by some of the other members of that organisation? With regard to Turkey joining the EU. Do they still want to? Look how they have been treated. Will they benefit by doing so?

Flightholiday..I think they do want to join the EU because it would make one hellof a difference with there trading with rest of Europe. It cuts out alot of red tape and paper work when the rest of your neighbours are already in the"club"But I think it would quite awhile before they got into the single currency market, but we shall see in very near future no doubt!!!

Dont get too excited folks, they are alongside Libya, Burkina Faso, Costa Rica, Croatia and Vietnam, Mexico ,Austria, its non permament status and a rotational thing. The big 5 are not going to let anyone else in on their game. It must irk the likes of Turkey, Germany,Canada,India, Japan Iran, that UK and France are on the permanent council and nobody else can be.

Hi All, Is it true that Turkey now stay on the council for two years. They have been trying to get on since 1961,with the last big push in 2003.Its not gone down very well with the greeks. But it looks as though they will just have to put up with it, Paul.

Turkey were lucky that Iceland upset the other voting countries by not helping out its banks. It's an ill wind that does nobody any good as they say. Whilst it is only for 2 years, Turkey still needed a 2/3 majority vote which tells a story as to their ranking in the world today. Also means they could get voted back on again next time. Many countries would love to be on the Council (not to mention Greece - oh I bet they laughed!). Hector

" its really absurd that a country that violates un resolutions, occupies a eu and un member state and disregards human rights and the un charter,to be elected as non permanent member of the un security council" Quote from Cyprus house president Marios Garoyian. They dont like it up em Captain Mainwaring, Paul.

newlad, 2years. See http://www.un.org/apps/news/story.asp?NewsID=28606&Cr=Security+Council&Cr1= The Cyprus House Presidents statement is great, everytime the EU reads such things, it will show how childish the behaviour and like any spoiled child ,start to ignore their demands. "The House President added that the election of Turkey as a non-permanent member-state of the UN is a step backwards, in accordance with the UN sensitivities for countries that violate human rights and constitute a threat for international or regional peace, stability and security. - (KYPE) I hope the EU and UK in particular note he didnt didnt have any problem with that democratic and " non violator of human rights" , Uganda!!! who also won a place.

I wouldn't get too excited - they don't have the veto. That only goes to the permanent members of the UNSC who can still outvote them anyway - especially on Cyprus. But it's good that TR is being given a chance to prove itself worthy of eventual membership. "The total 10 non-permanent members can vote on council actions, such as military intervention and economic sanctions, but each permanent member has the added ability of vetoing resolutions. Decisions on procedural matters are approved with the votes of nine of the 15 members, and for substantive matters, all five permanent members must be part of the nine in the affirmative." http://www.pbs.org/newshour/updates/europe/july-dec08/turkey_10-17.html

It really shows how the Cyprus Problem is low down the international list of things to do and is a reward for Turkey's efforts in the region and in particular as a go between for Israel and Syria. But well done Turkey getting 78% of the vote, only 7 votes behind Japan and 18 more than Austria.
