The 'NEISR' an independent body has confirmed that Labour vastly exaggerated the benefit of economic migrants from Europe. The value of GDP to the economy was 0.1% which is virtually nothing, in fact it would be the amount you would expect from increase in workers entering the workforce.

It is the knowledge worker economies that create real wealth for a country and very few EU migrants entered these professions.

Economic migrants forced down the wages for low paid work which ensured a drop in living standards for the most vulnerable British national workers. Many British workers who can only work in the manual professions found themselves unable to compete.

The report did acknowledge that Eastern European workers are very hard working and reliable. Many British firms purposefully chose European workers over UK workers to do menial work.

Hi,

During the UK General Election campaign a UKIP spokesperson raised the issue to "too many" EU migrants to the UK.

All of the other contributors (Con, Lib Dem, and Labour) in the debate quickly pointed out that there are more UK citizens living in other EU contries than there are non-UK EU ctizens living in the UK.

Many of the UK citizens living in other EU countries are nominally retired but many work in bars and restaurants "just to have something to do" and frequently for no pay. We can see this in the TRNC all of the time. This practice of course has an effect on the wages of locals, just as alleged in Msg 1.

So when you contemplate deporting Paddy the Polish Plumber, Mick the Maltese Maintenance Man, or Liam the Latvian Labourer, remember that you face the prospect of your retirees being sent back to become 'clients' of the NHS and other social supports in the UK.

As this forum is largely populated by ex-pats in the TRNC, makes this all the more ironic.

I was just thinking a little more about your good post.

I think there are 3 million Brits living in Spain. I wonder if this has anything to do with the extremely high unemployment rates in Spain. I know they have suffered from the collapse of the Construction industry. I would also be interested in knowing how much Spain has to pay out for Brits using their health system. This could be enormous

If there are no economic benefits to Economic migrants, it seems that the key messages are:

*If you have plans to live in the EU then you would be advised to support immigration

*If you are an employer you will benefit from cheaper labour

*Diversity enhances our lives (questionable)

I guess as ever it is the poor who suffer

Message 4: you do need to bear in mind that the UK pay fixed monthly amounts to the Spanish government for the health needs of British nationals who are permanently resident in Spain. This practice is in place for the citizens of most EU countries who reside in another member state. France bowed out of this arrangement because the British government refused to pay what the French wanted as their health service is extremely expensive.

Very interesting. Thanks for the heads up. Does that mean that the argument that Brits being sent back to the UK would be a drain on the NHS is insubstantive?
