Is it safe to drink the tap water in TRNC if using a filter? We will be living in the Iskele area and wondered if we could have a fridge with a water filter and ice machine which will be plumbed in

You big girls blouse! I take 2 pints when I arrive back in TRNC, get the runs for a day or so and then the immune system kicks in and all is well. I prefer to spend money on beer rather than water! Richard

I've drunk tap water from the mains for the last 5 years, and still alive to tell the tell. I fill up water bottles from the tap outside, and always check it and the water is perfectly clear.

Never drunk anything else for the last 4 years..... apart from Efes. No harm done I can assure you. (I do live half way up the mountain though and the local reservoir is just above me). NEVER drink from wells on the lower terraces though. Cess pits etc above will be contaminating the water.

Friends had Catalkoy water tested in the UK and it was on a par with the water from their local water authority. I cook with it and use it for the kettle. I do filter it first though as it has a high calcium content and filtering it stops the kettle getting furred up.

I think most people in Karmi drink the "mains" water. We use a Brita anyways...even in UK...gets rid of the terrible taste UK tap water has these days!

It really depends where your water is coming from, but I would strongly advise against drinking any water from the tap, there are still many miles of old asbestos water pipes that are yet to be replaced by the EU project.

I have always been scared to use tap water, even in the restaurant we used bottled for veg salads and to make teas and coffee. I wont even use it to clean my teeth, only to shower x I have seen how quicky washing machines, diswashers kettels etc get furred up. Is it due to limescale in it x

Chris msg 1- This answer will probably not help you: 1] I can drink local water with little troubles see Richards comment in Msg 7 2] My wife (who is not so hardy) would not risk it but she will drink it if boiled and after being filtered. 3] Like many people the tooth brush gets wetted with tap water and you don't think about it. 4] Bottled water is relativley cheap but of course less convenient. 5] Lilli asked about lime scale - yes, most of the mains water used on the island is pumped up from limestone areas and that means it will fur up most equipment when heated. We sell water filtration, purification and softening products all which could help you so I am biased in the fact I would suggest you look at our site and some of the ecologicaly sound products that one of our suppliers sells: http://www.softcleanwater.co.uk/index.php?main_page=index&cPath=38 - the products can reduce hardness, bacteria and chemicals Tom http://www.softcleanwater.co.uk & http://www.flightholiday.co.uk

I have used my well water for drinking and all other purposes, for the last 6 years having had it tested by the laboratories in Nicosia where it was given a clean/pure/drinking water certificate. I live within 100 yards from the sea so my well is low down the mountain but it holds over 90 tonnes in two large caverns, the lowest one being at 72 feet deep, upper cavern at 45 feet. I have filled my 12 x 6 swimming pool from the well in an afternoon also. (about 95 tonnes)

I think it's releavant to what your 'tap' is connected to. I am happy to drink direct mains water, but nothing that comes via a storage tank.

I don't think its just about whether the water is/looks clean, but it can cause kidney stones.

There is NO evidence to suggest that HARD water causes kidney stones....In fact water is Deliberately "Hardened" with Gypsum,to create a better medium in the Brewing industry, A process known as Burtonisation .... .................Cheers

We've used our tap water for everything, other than straight from tap to mouth as it were, for over 6 years. However, we use mains water for all cooking, hot drinks, washing salads. I can't understand these people who use only bottled water for cooking. Ours comes through the water tanks and if it is contaminated then we must be hardened to it by now. You're more likely to get eye infections from the hot water shower tap when the water sits on the roof of your house in the summer, simmering away or from the bacteria breeding in the shower head. I wonder how many people dismantle the shower head and thoroughly cleanse with disinfectant? Tango1
