Hi,

My grand daughter is over in Aiya Napa for a few months over the Summer and seems to have gone through a LOAD of credit in just 2 or 3 days !!! She's with Vodaphone, not too sure what the charges are but they are obviously very high.

What would forum members recommended (apart from Skype which we lready have) is the cheapest way to make calls from Cyprus via mobile.

Also does anyone know if I can put some credit on her Vodaphone mobile from here in the UK. I would normally top up via any 'hole in the wall' machines but not too sure if this would work when the mobile is outside the UK.

Greatful for any help,

John

She may be charged for making calls and for receiving them, calls from North Cyprus are expensive so maybe they are from the South also, can you get in touch with Vodaphone they will tell you what the charges are, with Orange there is a no you can call to ask.

Buy a local sim the cheapest way rather than use UK network to phone home

Different networks in the South to us in the north and north networks dont work in the south

also rebtel offer a solution world wide

We change to local sim cards when in TRNC - if using mobile/sim normally used in England - could rack up literally hundreds - I wouldn't advise you topping her up from here - she should change her sim - use Skype OR you can buy pre-paid 'phone cards (can't think the name of the one we use - but most corner shops that sell 'phone cards, would advise you the one with the best rates). Geographically - they all favour some countries over others - to buy to ring Cyprus (which would be deemed the Greek side) would be a different card/rate for Turkey (TRNC). The instructions are on the card - I think I recall you dial a pre-ordained number, then the number you want.....and can talk for ages...........

It would have been better to ask this on a board covering South Cyprus....However, I use a CytaVoda SoEasy card for when I am in the South or can get a signal in the North (surprising how far the signal goes).

It is not cheap to start as the sim package cost me 15 Euro (though that did include some calls). Once up and running it is much much cheaper than the Northern equivalents. Text messages to the UK are almost free and calls to UK landlines a few pennies. Obviously anyone calling from the UK finds it a lot cheaper for them too.

Skype is still my main means of communication when at home, but when out and about I use Cyta whenever I can.

Thanks for that, maybe a call to Vodaphone might be a good idea.

Could she buy a SIMM card in Cyprus for calling home that would maybe work out cheaper than her Vodaphone SIMM? She'd presumably have to top that up locally. Some of us have Skype and some don't and it's those that she wishes to keep in touch with via her mobile.

Incidentally since my initial posting we've been able to top up her phone form a 'hole in the wall' in a local bank here in the UK and that worked OK but that's really only a temporary solution...

Yes it will work out cheaper to get a Cyprus sim for when she is in Cyprus. Both calls to the UK from Cyprus and calls within Cyprus will be cheaper with a local sim than using vodaphones UK standard 'roaming' rates. Also you can call from skype to someone who does not use skype themselves. You will need to set up a skype account and put some money into it but again the rates for calling from Cyprus to the UK landline or UK mobile via this route will be significantly cheaper than using a UK vodaphone sim on its standard 'roaming' rates.

Dear veeveecee

Your Daughter needs to have mobile phone that will allow the use of a non Vodafone UK sim card in her phone.. or use another ( one - not locked to just one network)

She can use :

MTM:

http://www.mtn.com.cy/index.cfm/id/39/lang/english/mtnpayasyougo#a_30

or CyTA:

http://www.cytamobile-vodafone.com/Default.aspx?ID=80

There are even plans to get intl calls cheaper

Sending txt (sms) messages from the Rep of Cyprus to numbers off island are very reasonable

Even picking up voicemails on the UK vodafone is expensive - Your Daughter should leave a voicemail on it giving the new (temp) CY number ..

My Nephew is doing really well - lost all his hair - and apologising for being ill - he has a rare form of Leukaemia (Acute Myeloid Leukemia) - normally associated with older people ... Hope to rearrange to meet up soon !

John,

Vodaphone charge £1.69 per min for international calls. They do have a "passport" scheme option that will reduce the cost tho. This covers South Cyprus but wont cover North Cyprus....

Hope this helps

Hi Madhatter

Calls from Cyprus ( excl. 'northern' Cyprus) are covered by EU enforced caps..

These are the pay as you go rates - but the std monthly rates are the same

http://campaigns.vodafone.co.uk/goingabroad/costs.php?country=29&tariff=2

39p minutes to call UK, 15p minute to receive ..11p for a txt ( sms)

Call rates from TR ( incl 'TRNC' ) are:

to UK 1.65 / min, receive 1.30/ min sms/txt 49p - pay monthly are the same rates but txts are 'only' 35p

Whatever she decides to use, I'd suggest you recommend she sticks to text messaging, it's much cheaper and encourages you to 'get to the point'!

Hi BFF re msg 16

If you'd asked me in August '10 if I would I be happy to be in the top half at the end I'd have said YES..

It's somewhat galling to see Norwich and possibly Swansea go up .. BUT... I'm not sure that the PL rules on ownership disclosure would have been met by Leeds.... even now there's' lots of 'layers'

It looks like we might be waiting for West Ham ( and may be Blackpool ) to remind is how much better we need to get? ;)

Mark,

May be, but Blackpool beat Bolton 4-3 shades of the famous 1953 final maybe an omen for the visit to Man Utd.

Good luck for next season
