I just wondered - if and when I sell my property and take the new owners to the utility offices to get their names changed on the bills for the future, do I reclaim my deposits or can they just be transferred to the new owners? I think that would be the simpler option but would it be allowed? Everything is so protracted here so I have no reason to think that this would be straightforward. Also, does anyone know, does the seller need to pay a solicitor to do the conveyancing or is it just the buyer who pays? 7 years ago, the lady who sold the property to me did not have to pay anything, we, the buyer paid for the transaction. I wondered whether this was still the case.

From experience you can write off the deposits. It's like getting blood out of a stone, unless you're going to stay several months in rented accommodation then you can continually nag them. As for conveyancing, save your money and just do a basic 'I'm selling , you're buying' contract.

Sue we went to pay the final bill for the restaurant some 6 weeks ago, also to ask for the refund for the meter, Guido went again on friday as the new owner wants to get it in his name. We were then told we have to go to Leltkosia for a refund to be issued. There we were told a cheque would be sent out at some stage. I dont hold my breath x

mess 1 - getting a sale will be far far more important than getting your deposits back.... As that scottish bird up the tumbar once said: "you only enjoy property ownership in the trnc twice - once when you buy and once when you sell......." But this might have to be modified with not much selling...........

My friend Linda Orams, (who I'm sure all of you know lost her home Lapta in the the High profile court case a few years ago} Linda is a beligerant and gusty person, and she returned to Cyprus last year and spent the best part of a week banging on doors determined that she would get her electric deposit back. After much screaming and shouting and plenty of teeth knashing, Kibtek eventualy capitulated and gave in. Even though everybody at Kibtek new who she was, she still had to get a letter from the Muhtar to prove it!. Kibtek told her she was the first person to get her deposit back. Cheers to you Linda wherever you are.

Poor Linda, as if she didnt have enough to deal with. You are so right about door banging, they just shrug, they do not care. They have had your money. Says it all really if Linda was the first and probably only one to get it back. We are not talking pennies here. We tried to get them to take the final bills payment from the deposit. Can you imagine the responce. x Oh well door banging it is then x

It took 2 months after asking for the deposit back for our cheque to finally arrive. Take the final bill print out (which they can give you after you pay the bill downstairs) to the lady upstairs, Mrs Latifer. She looks formidable but she's ok. Tell her you need to get your deposit back. We just picked up our cheque for 876 tl
