I've just read some English newspapers on line (seen the pictures, read the comments) - now I would like to read some Irish newspapers, pro and con the royal visit. Can you tell me which ones to read? P.S. From a distance this "very important piece of history" leaves the main impression (English press) of a very costly, military operation with a lot of unrest and Irish protests. Can you enlighten me about the importance?

It's important because this is the first Royal Visit to the Irish Republic in 100 Years. After the partition of Ireland, no serving English/British Monarch has set foot there since 1911 so this visit is huge in it's importance. About 35% of the Republic of Ireland inhabitants look favourably to the Queen, 50% are indifferent to Her and 15% disapprove of her and anything English. She is 85 years old and wanted to make reparation to the Irish people, for the harsh English rule, while she is still able to do so.

Thank you, Birdman. This photo caption from the Daily Mail on line made me think: "Her Majesty lays a wreath in the Garden of Remembrance in Dublin in memory of the Irish men and women who died resisting British rule." I changed Dublin in Nicosia and was wondering about the difference (must be there or?)... I'm almost tempted to ask more questions, but I won't before all C44 Brits and/or Irish(wo)men get angry. I'll better go on reading facts on the Internet and let the royal visit be what it seems to be: late symbolism.

Birdman She is not the queen of england. There has been no queen of england since eliz, daughter of henry 8th. She is not qe2, she is qe1 because she is queen of uk. Roll on the republic and we can elect a head of state. or more important roll on Scottish Independence and we can dump all the blue blood parasites.

Vince "Roll on Scottish independence !" - your words. Oh that your wishes were granted, just for you, and then see how far you go with your independence. Where do you hope to get your economy from? ( don't tell me Scottish oil because it is NOT Scottish oil !) Who will pay your prescription charges ? Who will pay your kids to go to University. At least with independence, I WILL NOT BE SUBSIDISING YOU ! You have the chance to be independent all by yourself, just kindly return all the benefits given to you by the BRITISH TAXPAYER !

@ msg 2: Three Irish(wo)men were kind enough to email me answers to my question in msg 2. Thank you! P.S. Off topic: Isn't it a worrying sign that decent people prefer not to join threads on this board anymore (I was given the reasons)?

I think its a wonderful achievement, I take my hat of to the Irish governement and of course the British government. Us Irish are big enough to move on and accept its all in history now. I felt very proud watching it. There was no bowing and scrapping all equals. Wonderful.

Hi All, The visit has been a resounding success. All the right symbolism and statements. History being put where it belongs - in the past! A (very) few loonies on the streets protesting - no doubt the same lot will be out for Barak O'Bama on Monday. The so called protests are just an excuse for mischief making by a bunch of street thugs. Here is a thing... 6 MILLION people inn the UK have at least one Irish Grandparent. That means that the Brits have more Irish Grannies than the Irish do!!! How is that for close ties? The Windsors are more than welcome to visit any time. DD

Hi Liz, I look forward to seeing you again in September - I will remember to food parcel!! The Queen is off to buy some horses today and will then visit Cashel in Tipperary and finish up at the English Market in Cork City. Everyone is expressing disappointment that the 'ordinary' folks did not get a chance to see her and Phillip. Especially my Welsh Mother and English Wife. Maybe next time. FYI Prince William has visited here a few times by flying over in the heli from Angelsey. Very descrete. DD

msge 23 "6 MILLION people inn the UK have at least one Irish Grandparent" Thats very interesting. I know that one half of my family descends from county Cork. I guess its not surprising then that the ROI football team is partly made up of people born in England I have to say 'hats of' to the Queen. I am not a fan of the Royal hierarchy, but she does definitely do her bit, cant be easy at her age and she is also a brave woman. It cant have been easy to have predicted the reception she was going to get.

Never mind the ROI football team - just look at England. Rooney (Grannie is a Fitzsimons), Cahill, Carragher, Gerrard, ALL with Irish Parents/Grandparents. DD

Found out recently that my Scottish great grandmother's name was Doherty, which I believe is Irish. I think the queen is wonderful, and very brave. As the 1st Eliz. didn't have an heir, the son of her cousin Mary of Scotland, became monarch of Great Britain. The Union of the Crowns began, and thereafter, James V1 of Scotland became James l of Great Britain. Although we never had an Elizabeth reigning in Scotland, we did have James, Alexanders, and David etc. So if any of those names come up as monarchs in future what are you going to call them? n.b The prayer book that Mary carried to her execution has just been kindly lent to us for a short period (to a school doing a project on that period) and reunited with the cross she also carried.

I take it the detractors of our (Scotland's) independence saw the result of our general election on the 6th May?? And Birdman politics is about Choice we choose to spend our money educating our people with no costs attached because there is nothing more important than an educated populous one that can make Rational and Informed decisions and contribute to the wealth of that nation. You summation and view of us is not one that is fortunately held by those who know the facts and figures. It will do the British Isle good to have 2 equal independent states co- habiting the island and will hopefully lead to a secession of comments and thoughts such as yours.

nuttynora My wife was from "The Outer Hebrides " I have nothing against the Scots.Just those of you who keep bleating on about independence. We too in England would LOVE to have free education but it cannot be afforded. Of course it is important to have an "educated populous" If it can be given free, then wonderful. You lucky people in Scotland get twice the income per capita head from British taxes than we do in England, that's why you can also give free prescriptions to sick people. Take your head out of the sand, without the rest of the UK where would your income come from? There are not enough people living in Scotland to sustain yourselves, you would become a VERY small fish in an expanding Europe. As an Independent country, your economy would not allow you to even get entry into Europe !Believe me I am NOT knocking the Scots, they have made some of the worlds best inventions, have produced some of the worlds best Engineers etc. but INDEPENDENCE ........ WHY? YOU GOT IT GOOD NOW

Look to the future. England, Wales Scotland Ireland, we do not make the rules anymore. Europe does but we have our loyality x |

Yes Lilli, a resounding success. Who would have thought it possible. What a brave woman to even contemplate the trip she has just undergone. Yes the Government of the time were so wrong in so many things, but that was so far in the past. All governments acted in the times they were living in and what seemed good then we now know to be terribly wrong. It wasn't only the British Government that did things wrong though as many would have us believe. As they were doing wrong, so they many good things too. Gerry
