A mate has asked me, and I certainly don't know the answer, but if you buy a car privately, i.e. not from a dealer, does the purchaser need a Muhktar latter, maybe as proof of address for the registering at the car reg place? We know the seller must have letter, but not sure about purchaser. Maybe anyone in the know could post the whole procedure? Thanks

Yes it's the buyer who really needs the Muhtar's letter as proof that the car was the seller's to sell. You get the letter, take it to the Car Tax Office in Lefkosa (the one not far from the immigration offices) along with the log book, payment (not sure but 200TL rings a bell - no doubt gone up a bit) and proof of identity and TRNC driving licence....

Sorry, is that a typo? ..... it's the 'buyer' who nees the letter as proof the car was the 'sellers' to sell. Do you mean it's the 'seller' who needs the letter to prove it was 'theirs' to sell?

No, when you get to the tax office they won't put the car in the buyer's name if he can't produce the letter...

just sold mine, the seller needs a form from a car sales place then he fills in the top half(it's in english) the buyer fills the bottom half then take it to the muktar with your passport. He stamps and dates it the buyer has 7 days to register it in his name.

Selhurst, We bought a car privately without getting any form from a car sales place... but then things do change! We went to the Muhtar with the seller and got a letter (actually he had a prepared form to fill in). It was stamped and we took it over to the tax office with the log book...
