Hi AJ it's not really a 'story'... part of any settlement will involve compromise from all parties.. and that is going to include a TR troop reduction, property settlements and lots of agreements that TCs, GCs and ( sadly) foreign powers who have all got agendas that might not be in Cypriots best interests .. It would be better if all sides stopped playing to the gallery ...

If old Yero Muhtaro south of the border, can fart with black smoke coming out of his backside, surely our eroglu is allowed to drop a few silent ones. The trouble is of course that the silent ones do rather smell. Apparently, Yero Muhtaro of the South, intends to take thousands of Settlers and Brits to EU courts. My fascist friends including their Admin in that not so famous fascistaki forum south of the border are having ecstatic political pleasures over the new threat by the old Muhtaro. Has anyone got any spare well ripe tomatos for them. They will need them. Failing that send some rumbabas, they will serve in the same way. Wrap it round the tree as it were.

The irony is in many ways TC have had and still have to a degree a massively dispropotionate influence on Turkish political life. Denktash for much of his 'reign' in Cyprus was more known and more popular in Turkey than Turkish politicans. There is much serious evidence of the TC 'tail' wagging the 'Turkish' dog on many occasions since 1950. Puppet on a string may be a nice 'soundbite' but reality is as ever more complex and subtle in my opinion.

Hey Sixems, A guy I was talking to not long ago (Campbell would refer to hin as a "reliable source") told me he knew for a fact that there were significantly fewer Turkish troops in TRNC than people realised, and significantly more Greek troops in the south. How come we never hear calls for Greece to withdraw her troops from the Rest of Cyprus?

another state that probably will be reducing its troops is the uk already dhakalia (did I spell that right?) is reduced in capacity and now an expert has been drafted in by the british government with the brief to look at the overall question of cyprus bases can't see that akrotiri is amenable to much in the way of cuts since it is supposed to be in constant heavy use by the americans perhaps the eastern army base could close, but britain will then have to decide what to do about its sovereign status: and this relates to the earlier, optimistic, cyprus agreements about the turkish army in cyprus, as anywhere it is generally a sound policy to reduce garrison size dependent on the real likelihood of any attack and the ease of reinforcement: after all, its role is purely preventative, ...although that seems to enrage one or two misguided souls

re msg 10 anndre514 as to who is misguided - well if that was debated on a non 'TRNC' forum - I confidently predict who would be seeking 'guidance' ..continue to delude yourself... re msg 9 Rotto I took great delight in travelling all over the island and the mainland GR troops must have been well-hidden... As for the numbers of TR troops.. we aren't ever likely to know the real numbers of either'side' ,, For sure GR can't afford a large number of troops on CY any more that the Brits can justify keeping Dhekelia open .. the problem with the eastern SBA is what / how to 'dispose of it.... Annan allowed for a sizeable chunk to be part of the deal ...

I always get the impression that many of the barracks here house nothing more than a small "maintainence" team presumably to make sure the facility is in readiness for any need for a large movement of troops from Turkey. It is certainly not like the large town of Colchester, for example, where a few thousand troops manage to give the impression that there are soldiers on every street corner.

message 9 mark: I agree with mark, there is scant logic in greece creating any provocative garrison ...and I do appreciate noting the spelling of dhekelia, the only base up for grabs regarding the rejected "annan plan" the general idea was to hand over about half of the s.b.a.territories as kind of dowry to a re-united cyprus, and just because annan fell at the first hurdle it doesn't mean that any similar cannot be made at some hypothetical point in the future closing dhekelia s.b.a. without losing face may bother the tory backbenchers but more likely that zone will be gifted to south cyprus one day, without any settlement for britain or turkey seriously cutting back their presence in order to save money, it is always worth remembering they are there in cyprus for quite different reasons: britain may well be forced to reduce its overseas committments in the future, ....while turkey would be looking instead at getting the same bang for less bucks
