Hi there, i am moving to TRNC with my husband and two girls (aged 4 and 7) in late Aug. My husband has gained a post in one of the schools in Kyrenia. We are likely to be living in Lapta and we are keen to establish contact with any other families who have moved out or will do so in the near future. We have visited TRNC twice before and really appreciate all it has to offer, although we both fully appreciate the reality of holidaying in TRNC is completely different to living/ relocating there. On the practical side, any info on recent shipping of possessions experiences would be gratefully received. We are also looking to buy a suitable family car soon after we arrive, so any advice re this or anyone selling a car please let me know. Many thanks - i look forward to yr replies.

Hello Rebecca

Would you like to email me so that I can reply with more information for you? Our first task is to 'quantify' the goods you wish to bring, so we'll complete an inventory sheet together. We can provide a full door to door service - even from the Isle of Wight (we shipped a 40' container load from there last year to North Cyprus) Full assistance provided with obtaining your Exemption from Duty Certificate.

I'll look forward to hearing from you.

Regards

Jo Valentine

For shipping, try Euromed - UK phone number: 0208-3658888 or see their website: http://www.euromed-uk.com I have used this company on a number of occasions over the years - most recently last week - and have always found them excellent. Helpful, reliable and reasonably priced.

I would suggest you hire a car for your first month then see what second hand cars are on offer (there always seem to be a good selection on this board). New cars are expensive

Another removal company is Dolphin but I have no experience of them We moved from Spain with Pickfords....they were ok but gave us duff information regarding importing a car/scooter. You just have to take a chance with one of them.

Hi Becky

I wish you a successful move and that your husband settles in well in his new school. The advice you receive from all parties here is good, based on their own experience.

For the future Becky, just in case you were to consider buying property, please keep my website in mind. It's not to put you off buying, just to make you aware of all the pitfalls ...

Type madhatter in the search box at the top of the page, scroll down to read his posts, 3 year syndrome when ex-pats gets bored is one to read.

Becky

Before you buy any car, check out what the cost of taxing it will be. It can be horrendous. Larger the car the more the tax will be. If buying second hand make sure the annual car tax has been paid to date or you could end up having to pay that.

Msg 16,

Did you not research your move properly before committing yourself - and your young children - to a politically unstable and backward territory such as the "TRNC"? Good luck whatever, but remember this is far from a Western democracy and foreigners who try to stick up for their rights have found out it is effectively a corrupt police state. Sorry if I sound blunt, but it's a bit late in the day for only now spotting "scary stories" on the internet.

Still, Kyrenia harbour is very romantic after a couple of drinks...

Hi thanks for your replies. With regards to a car we were looking to buy a cheaper type but thanks anyway Shanselc - but thanks for the information with regards to the vehicle size etc much appreciated.

With regards to your message Zoots we have done alot of preparation and research before committing ourselves, particularly where we have a young family. We have also visited the area a number of times so familar with it, but very aware of the fact that holidaying somewhere is completely different to living somewhere. I have not only now spotted the scary stories, but we have been in touch with other people personally who have moved to TRNC and have positive stories to tell which is good to hear. We are renting property we certainly are not looking to buy and we have ensured that we have funds in UK which are secure and allows us to have a base here should it not work out for whatever reason. But thanks for your post and we are cautious with regards to the stories we read.
