Turkey comes to "save" the Turkish Cypriots - who now accuse their "saviour" of trying to wipe them out. Sweet irony is a fickle mistress...

zoots, I really think "wipe out" is a bit of an exaggeration ...that's what the people in "eoka b" had up their sleeve nonetheless you can just imagine the discomfiture of tc's and all the sadder the other lot were temprementally unable to compromise in any shape or form the 2004 road map they rejected would have placed a strict limit on mainland immigration, would it not?

I wonder if TC's had similar fears post '74 when they were being granted UK/Australian (and a few others) citizenship for themselves and children, and given a passport to access the world? Perhaps if people are so concerned about their identity, they should give up other passport first and show they really do have allegiance to their ancestral homeland? Maybe before giving out 'citizenship' to all an sundry, they would do well to look at the models of other countries where imported immigration is perceived by many (if not most) to be a major cause of social problems, and the deprivation of the indigenous community in some areas. Ten's of thousands might not sound much against a mainland Europe population, but in NC it's a sizable percentage. I guess in the end it will be as well thought through as the initial car park system at Ercan, or the lighting and junction system for the Kyrenia bypass. So, nothing to worry about there then.

immigration from turkey is "different" to many other world migration issues and to that extent zoots is right after all, the 150,000-plus foreigners in south cyprus cannot challenge the local culture and way of life, they are building foreign enclaves instead then again, traditional patterns of movement from poorer agrarian places to industrialised/more developed job markets can be regulated by controls but in the case of embattled north cyprus, you can't really have it two ways either turkey protects north cyprus and will then find it perfectly suitable for settling a percentage of its teeming asiatic millions there (and this is the real reason turkey will never be admitted to the eu) or we are talking takeover-by-south-cyprus, oops, I mean "majority rule" which when tried once, was ended just short of genocide: ...yes zoots, turkey saved the tc's but nobody said they are mary poppins meanwhile it does seem sensible that illegals get integrated into the trn

just to clarify my ambivalent line about turkey not being admitted to the eu: I was of course referring to french, german and other northern voters claiming to fear mass immigration from turkey .....not much to do with cyprus, really "where!?!"
