As promised I said I'd mention about a new 'KA band' sat internet service that started on May 31st

Today I installed two systems in the Cotswolds.. Weston sub Edge and tomorrow we'll be on the Oxon / Glos 'frontier'..

The dish is about the size of a SKY dish for Scotland / Ireland - but solid and cream in colour.. only one cable runs from the dish to the sat modem - slightly bigger than most ADSL boxes..

We got 7907Kps down on speedtest.bbmax.net and an INCREDIBLE 1277 up ( we get 10,000 down and 500 up from BT and 15,500 down / 870 up from SKY.. on ADSL

This places were in the middle of no-where

Washerman says that such systems are 'illegal' ( so are 4.2 m dishes apparently ) but they are licence free in EU nations

As ErolZ says the ping times.. response is poorer - but if you simply want email / web browsing that WORKS...

I'm overseeing the two installs tomorrow and upgrading so 'old' Ku band kit on Friday

It will be interesting to see how the people get on.

IF.. this service works well in the UK / France and Spain over the next month we have installs in Mallorca, ( Majorca) and Normandy, I intend to offer in in Cyprus.

Perhaps that will make ISPs improve their service.. I'm taking photos and will post them over the next few days..

I can connect to the installs and will monitor how they work with things like SKYPE

Hi 'arry

What exchange are you on / who's the ISP ... if it's in the UK you can email me and I'll tell you what you SHOULD get / COULD get

Something called FTC ( fibre optic to the cabinet ) - giving 40 Mps down and 10 Mps up - in theory is coming soon - some place already have it.. BT infinity

Mark, i have been looking at the tooway website about the new KA satalite and in their text it says that you can add a tv modem and recieve free to air tv. I have tried to get more information from tooway about just what you can recieve and if it is possible to get Sky packages through this system. Maybe you as an installer know a bit more about this than i can find out. I'm sure a lot of people would be interested in getting internet via the KA system, and even more if the tv side of it worked too.

Couple of quick questions:

1) If the 'ping' is not great is it still OK for streaming up/down?

2) What are the installation costs?

3) What are the monthly costs?

Cheers Mark,

re 5/ 6 Geoff / St George

Sky BBC ITV via this dish

Not in CY - it is too small - In western Europe you CAN use the one dish for both ! :(

Streaming / Downloading would work fine - BUT - remember that Sat internet sets strict limits on 'fair usage' - if you download a lot of video content - you will get throttled / slowed down and may have to pay more..

Pricing / costs to follow - I'll be posting them on a website by the weekend - I want to make SURE - it works OK on SKYPE, today

Just noticed on the tooway UK website that the packages are limited on download allowance:

DOWN UP MONTHLY PRICE

Tooway 6 6Mb 1Mb 4GB £24.99

Tooway 8 8Mb 2Mb 8GB £39.99

Tooway 10 10Mb 2Mb 13GB £49.99

Tooway 10 plus10 10Mb 4Mb 25GB £99.99

£25pm sounds great for 6mb download speed and 1mb upload - but if you only get 4gb a month it's useless for streaming TV or anything like that I would think.

Mark, i thought that this new satelite ( KA ) was positioned over Cyprus and was to serve the eastern mediterianian and north african/ western asia areas. If you look on the tooway website ther is a satelite footprint coverage area and Cyprus is right in the middle. I have been asking questions from tooway about receiving tv and they seem to suggest that it is possible as the satelite is picking up the signal and then re sending it ( if that makes sence ) the problem seems to be using my Sky sports package with the tv modem i would need to buy from tooway to get tv. Any info would be great, as it would mean that i can get internet and tv through one source.

Hi St George, re msg 8

As I said if you want reliable internet browsing and email... and SKYPE.. it is great... IF you start downloading vids.. you'll have to be careful :(

I've spoken to a few folk on SKYPE, today ( on this sat internet connection) and it worked fine

Geoff, re msg 9

The sat is Eutelsat 9 - which is just south of the equator... it is at 9 degrees east.. Most SKY / BBC/ ITV stuff comes from 28.5 or 28.8 east.. and it will NEVER be received in CY via the dish used for internet.. You could only stream / download via the net :(...

The prices are correct.. but obviously there is a charge to send the special dish to CY

it WILL work in the UK / W.Europe as 28 east signals are stronger..
