I have read with interest on the forum many times about this 90 day residency obtained at the boarder crossing in Nicosia . And having never crossed to the south to obtain this 90 day residency, I wonder, how is it done? Do you just present your passport on returning to TRNC boarder crossing from the south and it's added automatically. Do you request the 90 day's? Can one just walk across, or do you have to drive across?

If past post are anything to go by, I am sure this post will bring forth many a interesting response. And I'm sure NN will have something to say as always!!!

I have a feeling that calling it a border might invite some comments however, when you return through passport control they will stamp either your passport or if you fill one out an insert slip with what they believe to be the appropriate length of days for your stay.

In my own personal experience it has been 90 days every time but I have heard stories of people gatting much less.

I have once requested 90 days but not for myself, my wife and daughter are not carrying EU passports and were once only given 30 days but on the next visit I went to the passport control window and pointed out that they were my wife and daughter and asked for 90 days, it was given with no problems.

I hope this might help in some way.

It is not 'residency' it is a visa which allows you to stay for 90 days, if granted.

However if you intend to live here permanently I would advise you to apply for residency through the proper channels.

Someone said it was 90 days if you are over 65 and 30 otherwise, but wives and dependants of over 65s can also get 90 days if all are crossing over together.

nurseawful, mess 3.

We do intend to live here, and will apply for residency when that time comes. But like I said in my post. it's a issue that is frequently brought up on the forum, and I am sure the fuller details of how this 'VISA' is obtained would be of interest to others like myself.

Thanks for your comments Chris.

porger1, Mess, 2.

Thanks for your comments. Which crossing did you use, and did you drive or walk across.

Dave,

I have done both but when I drive with the wife it is normally the metahan crossing.

As Chris has mentioned, it is a 90 day entry visa and if you carry an EU passport and were to fly into the RoC and travel to the TRNC it would be an automatic 90 day stamp (at least this is the EU ruling), however and this is where it gets a little down to the experiences of posters, if you arrive in the TRNC you should recieve the 90 day stamp and then if you travel to the south (RoC) you will probably recieve a 90 dy stamp on your return however that is not absolute.

As I understand it, the legalities are a little vague. You require temporary residency to stay over 90 days in TRNC, if you leave and then return you have officially left the country and are entitled to a new visit visa of 90 days but if you do it through the RoC crossing, the passport controller on the return might think it was purely to gain 90 days and will not give you it, you may only get the remainder of the first 90.

You are very welcome Dave.

Don't let this be known publicly but I have been told by several people now that there are a few very intelligent and in real life helpful and extremely knowledgable people in North Cyprus who just refuse to take this forum seriously and find it hillarious to wind up people with their posts, keep that to yourself mind and I am not saying that the person you might or might not be talking about is or isn't one of those people I might or might not be talking about if I were to be talking which I am not.

If you pretend to be CAPTAIN Jack Sparra' that actually nearly almost makes sense

Re: Msg 1,

My last experience: on arrival to TRNC ( from Larnaca) : 90 days, crossed to the South by car, came back : 90 days, crossed second time : 10 days! ( which I had not even noticed until the next time), third time: 90 days.

All by car, both Metehan and Famagusta crossings.

Clarissa, just to see if there is a pattern, was the 10 return at a different crossing or was it the same as the 90 day one and just circumstance (by which I mean, probably the passport controller as opposed to the control point)

Re : Msg 11,

I can not see any pattern.

It was the same crossing (Famagusta, Agios Nikolaos, to be precise). And I wasn't asked any questions.
