http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2011/jun/12/erdogan-triumphs-turkeys-election-ak-party Victory in the general election has given Turkey's ruling AK Party a strong mandate to pursue its reform agenda, but it will need to seek consensus to push through a planned new constitution. Based on a preliminary count, Prime Minster Tayyip Erdogan's party scored some 50 percent of the vote, and was set to win around 327 seats in the 550-member parliament, less than the 330 needed to send a new constitution to a referendum. The AK Party must find support from outside the AK Party to rewrite the constitution, replacing a charter drafted after a 1980 coup and criticised for limiting individual rights. Erdogan says a new charter will strengthen democracy and pluralism.

All votes counted now, AKP got 49.9% of the votes, somewhat higher than last time but they got 326 seats out of a total of 550 seats. this is a slight reduction to the number of seats they held before the elections. Can't remember the exact numbers. ismet

The elections had a 84.8 per cent turnout. It is over 50 years since Britain had such a turnout. Jack Straw says 'Is anyone still asserting that democracy and Islam cannot mix?' Once again Jack Straw is calling for Turkey to be allowed in to the EU and he criticises Germany and France for their EU stance on Turkey, who wrongly are turning their back on the strongest, richest and most democratic country in the wider middle east. Erdogan declared that Syrians, Bosnians, Lebanese and Palestinians will all benefit from his victory, underlying the confidence he now has in Turkey in being the dominant force in the region.
