yes but you have no insurance in the south for taxi use........... A trnc registered car can only buy insurance at the border and the cover is private use only - excluding hire and reward......... so carrying fare paying passengers in the south means you are operating illegally............ another trnc business racket....

Yes, Nick, but surely you can see their difficulties in this direction. Am I right in thinking that you are only taking issue with this because they are not 'upfront' about it? I did wonder why they covered the 'T' when they got to the border, is this the reason? My next question is...... are the Taxis which people get in the South insured when they cross to the North, or is this the same difficulty shared by the South's taxi drivers? I have no choice but to use the Taxi services here, I cannot get flights to Manchester airport most of the year except through Larnaca, wish CTA had not gone bust because it has made our flights home protracted, expensive and exhausting!

mess 4 - oy Smart arse Dave, i'm probably more qualified to comment on insurance issues in the trnc than any other person on this board...... They ain't insured in the south - ok ?? by saying they are "fully covered" is being deceitful - but if you are happy with this, than so be it - you've probably been fed a pack of lies when buying your property, so one more an' going to hurt........... mess 5 - and when he has a serious crash in the south and injures your family - is he going to pay you the compensation personally ? - or just give you a cypriot shrug ??

well i have used ozy and ibo taxis enough times to realise they are very relaible and genuine people . they will be there for me on wednesday and thats all that matters . as for message2 and the operating illegally ....not so sure as a taxi is registered to,operate and they all (both north and south taxis) cover the whole island . That would suggest a awful lot of illegal journeys being made each day ,week and month . im sure a private policy for car insurance may be different than a working vehicle . keep up the good work all you legal taxi drivers . kav

Yes, that's what I thought too, at least when your mates take you to the airport you fully know the insurance position and as you are not paying them (cos you picked them up) then you might be covered in the event of an accident. Why has this not been aired truthfully before?

Hi everyone, hope your all ok,taxis are all insured on the greekside, with an extra fee your car is insured for both sides but you still have to buy greek third party insurance to pass, you think the greek goverment is just going to let all these turkish cars pass for free, and when it comes to covering the T on the number plate,it means I'm a legal taxi but I'm in a different country so I can only pick up reserved customers,if I didn't cover T I could go to ayia napa on weekend and work and earn 5 times. What I earn in girne,so all cover number plates are legal and insured taxis,

mess 16 - you will have paid a fee to your trnc insurers to cover accidental damage to your car i the south.... the "third party" part of your policy ceases at the border and you have to buy insurance to cover you in the south = however the only cover available is "private use" - excluding hire and reward............ So old fella - yo ain't legally insured in the south cos you ain't got hire and reward cover..... thats why you and our fellow taxi drivers cover the "T" on their plate with sticky tape - they know they ain't got any cover - just being deceitful to their fare paying customers........ so how do you get from larnaca to trnc legally ? - get a friend to give you a lift for free and when you are home, take them out for a meal t say "thank you".......... Over to the bearded wonder for more smart arse comments.........

NN why do you think it is impossible to get hire and reward cover that covers both the North and the South, either way round ? I personaly have not investigated the issue and do not know for a fact that you can but common sense tells that is pretty likely you can. Insurance compnaies care about risk and return via premiums vs that risk. You can get insurance for just about anything at the right price, so why not hire and reward cover that covers both TRNC and RoC ?

Not that I have any particular knowledge of taxi insurance but I can't see why there should be a problem. Insurance companies will cover anything for a price and that is true the world over. In terms of private car insurance, fully comprehensive cover on either side of the divide means exactly that - you are comprehensively insured for the whole island. The 3rd party insurance on the border is just a money making scam. Surely it can't be too difficult for an insurer to extend their normal comprehensive cover to taxis? Ozy is a great guy anyway and would certainly trust him on this issue.

mess 29... your trnc policy can be extended to cover the damage to your vehicle, but you cannpt buy insurance for third party damage of passanger liability wen you go south - in the north... The only insurance available to trnc registered vehicles is at the border is "private use - excluding hire and reward"... So a trnc taxi carrying passengers for "hire" in the south is not covered, nor can they buy cover.... no matter how you twist it Huseyin - that's how it is..... Far better for your customers know the truth than being lied to and find out the hard way.....

NN is not a competing taxi driver so he does not have a hidden agenda, therefore why would he make a posting which was controversial/untrue? He has absolutely nothing to gain from this and I admire him for putting us all 'in the know'. You may not like the guy but I think he is an intelligent man who checks out his facts before posting, unlike a lot of others on the Forum. You can have a go at me now if it makes you feel good

mess 32..... the taxi drivers ain't happy because they have been "rumbled" by someone with 30 years experience in the insurance industry...... customers need to understand that if they use a trnc registered taxi in the south as a paying customer (and a GC registered taxi in the north) - there is no third party liability cover / passenger liability as the policy purchased at the border only covers "private use" one thin to consider, if travelling in an un insured (and obviously illegal taxi) - what if you, your family / friends are very seriously injured ? - you will receive ZERO compensation (well apart from a "cypriot shrug").... if ultimately the passengers are disabled and need round the clock care - who's going to pick up the tab ?? i am posting this, not to have a go at the trnc taxi drivers - but to let pottential passengers know the honest and true facts and based on that, you can make your own judgement.... cont/d......

My own opinion would be to get your neighbour to give you a lift and pay for his petrol - as this wouldn't constitute "hire and reward" so as long as they have "south" insurance, you would be ok. my opinion, is based on 30 years insurance experience, 25 of them with my own business employing 40 people. I also used to lecture in insurance practice and law and was responsible for in house staff training.....
