I am looking for some advice and any information on the local state run secondary schools around the Alsancak area. My daughter is just finishing the primary part at British Academy and unfortunately, after missing the first two entrance exams, she has not been offered a place at On Dokus Mayis which was our first choice. Any help or advice would be grately received. Many thanks Kelly

Lapta Yavuzlar Lisesi would be the nearest one to you since you live in Alsancak.

thank you negativenick for your comment but I am not sure what that really has to do with my question and I also dont really see what it has to do with you what I plan on doing with my children or what they plan on doing in the future. if you have nothing constructive to offer then please feel free to mind your own business and post somewhere else.

You could have her repeat her final year once again in primary, however in a state school, allowing her to re-take the exams at 21may.

The only way you will get any advice that you can take as gospel will be to go to the Ministry on Education.

Seriously do yourself a favour and butt out. I have friends whos children went to school here at state schools and the education was much better than in the UK and they went on to get very good jobs in the UK. Maybe you should stick to things that you know about as the education system in the UK or TRNC is something that you obviously know nothing about.

mess 12 you post on a public forum - so have to expect people's opinions - soz and all that................ you seriously think that your child going back to the uk with 10+ years trnc education, you know an un-recognised country, full of scams, liars and cheats is going to get her ahead of kids educated in a proper country with recognised qualifications ? you are deluding yourself...... A trnc diploma is woth about as much as a trnc set of title deeds..... Why do you think the smarter and more aflunent expats send their kids to the private schools over here ? she'll be living with you for ever and working in the local bar for peanuts............

NN - are you serious? I`ll have to make sure I tell my brother who is a Pediatric Surgeon now having graduated from 19 Mayis back in 1999 that his high school diploma is worthless. 19 Mayis TMK had a 100% success rate for the Turkish university exam back in 03 when I graduated - our class now has 4 doctors, 2 pharmacists, a number of lawyers, an accountant and 5-6 engineers (myself included). As far as I know none of us ended up `working in the local bar for peanuts`...

Ok we all get the point! you have real issues with TRNC. Well no one is forcing you to be here and I am one of the people who choose to be here because I like living here! My family are happy here so we choose to stay. If you had any real knowledge about the education systems here you would know that the Private English Schools leave a lot to be desired with lots of families removing their children from them as they are not all they are cracked up to be. Yes i posted on a public forum as I thought I may get some constructive information which I did from yorguzlu, goonerboy and hwilde and I thank them for their help. Is it any wonder that people come to this forum for help and advice and leave never wanting to return as they are bombarded with useless information from people who obviously have nothing better to do than try and make everyone else as miserable as they are! We are happy here so decide to stay, if you are not, then go away and leave the rest of us alone. back on subject

Doola - can I just ask why your daughter missed the first two stages of the exam? Your best bet really would be to talk to the Ministry as if she hasn`t been here long enough to take the exams she might be eligible to go to 19 Mayis TMK anyway. It used to be if the child had moved over within 2 years of starting secondary school s/he would be accepted to the school without an exam.

AllyTT thank you for your support and well done to you all. I have heard so many good things about 19 Mayis and other Turkish run schools and this was part of our decision as she was not getting enough from the school she is in now (private).

I did not know that! I thought that if an English child had been here for over 2 years then they did not have to take the exams. The first 2 exams were held at her current school and we were not informed or offered this at the time. very confusing. I will talk to the ministry tomorrow and see what they say. Thank you.

Doola3 - most likely you were not informed about them at the time because your daughter does not have to take the exam. I just asked my mother (retired this year from the TMK in Nicosia) and she confirmed that as of the beginning of the year it was still automatic admission to the schools for students who had moved over in the last 2 years of primary education.

Hi AllyTT. Thank you so much for all your help but after many visits to the ministry of education by a Turkish friend of ours they have told us that she has no chance of attending On Dokus Mayis as she did not take the other exams and does not have automatic acceptance as she studied in a private school for the last year. Thank you. Kelly

Doola you should not dismiss what NN says, he talks a great deal of sense, he may not have anything good to say about the TRNC but he would only give you well meant advice.

Doola, Occasionly NN does indeed talk some sense, and I feel this is one of those such occasions. As AllyTT and others have stated, the state schools here in KKTC are indeed excellent, but are they suitable for your daughter? Let's presume you are able to enroll your daughter at one of them. Moreover, because she is fluent in the language, she thives in all her Turkish-medium subjects, enabling her to enter one of the prestigious state universities in Turkey. However, unless Turkey is in the EU by that time (if there’s still an EU, that is) you will be required to pay for her tuition there.

(Continued from the message above) However, I guess you will probably want her to attend a British university ... but unfortunately they will want to see how she fares in her A levels or the IB diploma. Yes, your daughter could take A levels at the British Council in Nicosia, but regretably the syllabi etc. in Turkish/KKTC schools does not prepare students for the A levels. If you really want her to attend a British university, then my advice would be for her to attend an international school here or a school “back home” from the age of 14 onwards, preferably from an earlier age.
