For those of us who have not had to do this before perhaps you could explain how to do it? Is it with boiling water? Thank you

I use Milton sterilising tablets, about once a month as you change bottle, pour Milton solution into empty bottle, fit back to cooler, draw some solution through, leaving solution to sit in pipes for maybe an hour, job done PS Milton is available in ablet or liquid form from Pharmacies

sorry, did not think to say how to do it, but same method as above.

I really just wanted to advise people who perhaps have never used them on a long term basis.

No-one ever told me to do it, I think i read about the nasties of the 'net and started after perhaps a whole year, guess I was lucky not to catch anything.

Great advice. Especially important for those who only use them in their holiday homes. Sterilise before using them and change any full water bottles that have gone past their use by date.

I do ours on a regular basis. This is good advice to publish on here, It is quite amazing just how bad they can get.

Most of them the top section will normally come out, for cleansing, You can also use a mild bleach solution or chlorine tablet in hot water, and rinse well.

Also as someone pointed out even more important for the Swallows, who may have left their machine with a little water in the system,

I would suggest that if you are a Swallow you drain it and clean it before you leave.

Also very important, Shower heads should be left hanging down for all water to drain, if not being used for a while.

Milton would cost an awful lot to put in your stored water tank, (very mild) use a few chlorine tablets or mild bleach,

Actually Bleach is probably one of the best, my sister runs an Hospital cleaning team in the UK and she always says that things like MRSA where due to the lack of use of bleach.

A cap full of bleach should kill the germs in a one or two ton water tank, chemical plants use a industrial bleach but measure it in the ppm (parts per million) range to kill bugs.

use the bleach method , tastes horrid , but sure makes your teeth white , note , this only applies to those of us with our own teeth , those with dentures should use the chlorine method and leave to steep overnight

Mr Pound have the tablets normally, Loose Boot's dosn't the top come off your unit, does it have around section that simply unscrews, if it does its a good idea to take all that apart and give it a good clean and rinse in mild hot bleach solution.

I use tablets, available from any pharmacy, called 'disinfectant effervescent tablets'. They are made by an Italian company, Chicco. They are about 19TL for 24 tablets and each tablet dissolves in 5 litres of water which is more than enough for a water cooler.

Chicco also sell the liquid version - we found it on the baby products counter in our local supermarket.

Why do you need to put the cleansing solution in a bidon? Surely you can pour a jugful into the top once you've removed the bidon and draw that through?

I bought some Milton tablets yesterday at the chemist in town 7.50tl for a box, Cleaned my unit in the afternoon, thought I had run it though enough after cleaning it until I made a fliter Coffee with the water. All I can say is it was not nice!! ran more water though nearly half a 19lt bottle and now I have to say water tastes a lot better.

Thank you for this advice, would never of thought about it before.

The chemist gave me 2 local stelisation tabs for my water filter. I did leave the tabs in for 24 hours. I have turned on the water lots and bought a new bottle but still the water tastes of chlorine. Is it harmful to drink, its even worse when emptied in a little drinking bottle.

I ran though half a 19lt bottle before it tasted ok, it shouldn't harm you as it is the same stuff you clean baby bottles in. It just tastes horrid in coffee!

It is also the same stuff we swim in in chlorinated pools, chlorine can not be all the bad. generations in my family have trusted milton.
