I had the embarrassment of when trying to pay my water bill at Credit west bank Catalkoy was told that one of the 1 TL coins was THE OLD MONEY .

It has " new turkish lire " on it and had a silver coloured edge to it rather than a gold coloured edge.

When I said well can`t you accept it as you are a bank.......was told oh no no...............

I hasten to add it was passed to me in change somewhere...........so i ended up putting it in the charity tin....

I know it`s only 1 TL..............but you would think a BANK could take in OLD DENOMINATIONS...

You can certainly change the old YTL notes at the Central Bank in Lefkosa, not sure if they take coins though and, unless you have a lot, you'd spend more on petrol to change them.

@ msg 1, LooseBoots: (...) but you would think a BANK could take in OLD DENOMINATIONS... (...)

▶ The Cypriot Turkish banks were fully prepared to change your "old one TL coin" FOR A WHOLE YEAR. After one year it was announced in the local papers that people had to go to the TRNC Central Bank in Lefkosha ( for years! to come) if they wanted to change 'old money'. If you'd had more interest in TRNC and the official way of living you could have known this. So why moan about your own ignorance?

P.S. I once was given a 20 Sterling note in Oxford Street, London, UK, and found out later that it was an old note out of circulation. And guess what: I could change it - but only at the Bank of England.

@ msg 5, LooseBoots: What an interesting way of saying that you didn't know about this aspect of life in TRNC. You cannot blame TRNC or the banks - so why not say sorry for your wrong msg 1..?!
