I have purchased a car in North Cyprus and tried to register it in my own name and was told the following, I can only register it if i have resdience permit. The insurance company also only used the previous owner on the documents and i assume we are insured as it states anyone with the permission of the owner. Very confusing i know. We would like to cross the border in the car but are not sure if they will allow this if the car is not regsitered in our name. Could anybody help with the following.

The rules must have changed since September 2006 because we bought a car then and didn't have residency until 2007. I would imagine that you will have problems at the border because you have to get 12 months road tax for the South the first time you cross and I don't think they will allow a driver who is not named on the log book to do this. Sorry.

Did you buy the car as a private deal? In which case I believe there is quite a ritual as is the norm here. You do not need residency but you do need muhtars letter from the seller and I also seem to remember you go to the registration office with the seller to do the transfer. I did here a "tale" of someone who bought privatley and the seller then left the country. The buyer was then unable to ever register the vehicle. As I say, this is the process as I have heard on the grapevine, so may not be 100% but I believe it is close to it. Unless of course someone can give the facts from horses mouth. Best bet as always is to take a friend who speaks Turkish to the office and get fact not fables. One 100% fact, you cannot take vehicle to the south.

We finally bought a car in October this year & it is registered in our names & we do not have residency in TRNC, & have the "log book" so not sure why you have been told that. The garage did the transfer for us.

I know the garage took photocopies of our passports to get the transfer done & we had the normal 90 day visa stamped in the passports

the place you have to go to is in lefkosa. the previous owner should be doing this for you as they have a fee to pay. also they may have outstanding fines! or credit on the car!! get a cypriot friend to help you with this one, if you can't find the seller you may have a big problem.

You could try speaking to Veli at Pegasos. He can arrange for the car registration for you for a fee. You will need to get a photocopy of the seller's passport and it is essential that it is the passport number that was entered on the logbook (if the seller is foreign). We did this with our first car and it was worth paying a bit extra for someone else to do the legwork especially as we did not live here at the time.

I did infact go to Lefkosa (my error) and went with the garage that sold the car firstly an office and then the post office they also said something about i need more than 3 months. But didnt state residency. I think i will have to find an agent to help. The car was purchased from a garage in Lefkosa and the guy appeared helpfull although we hit this stumbling block. The other part to our story regarding the car is after 1 from week from buying the car with 2 years warranty the car broke down. The garage arranged for it to be collectedand advised the head gasket had gone and this would not be covered under warranty, After various discussion and 2 weeks of him taking to decide he was not paying for the repair he backed down and said he would pay for the labour. We collected the car yesterday after paying 1500 Lira for parts it broke again 4 miles down the road we are now told the car has dirty fuel and will need further work. Another bill on the horizon and again further hire costs.

This is starting to sound like a complete nightmare. Perhaps you should take advice from the Consumer's Association. Sorry I don't have contact details but I'm sure it's been mentioned on here before so you can probably do a search.
