So WHY aren't we all bombarding DEFRA with letters and emails of complaint. Do they actually know the layout of Cyprus and how any stray dog can just wander across the border at will. Let us be asking these very pertinent questions.

Excuse the pun but this is "barking". My 2 dogs are clever animals but they do not recognise the Green Line so would, given the opportunity, I am sure, bound across....does that mean I can then take them to UK...mad as fish the lot of them at DEFRA!

Don't they also know that Ceuta and Mellila are in Morocco? Mangy arab dog, springs to mind.

It's a joke.

Cyprus 1 just refers to note 1 below, which refers to the buffer zone.

I was surprised to actually see such wording on a non-political site as DEFRA.

DEFRA I think are not the problem , it is the Greeks who have complained via the EU and as usual have got there way.

I do agree though some kind of protest is needed.

Sorry, my two dogs won't join any protest-barking. They say they're fine in TRNC and want to stay here.

I have no intention (at the moment) of leaving and taking my dogs back - BUT - some people have to return for various reasons and find the cost of quarantine too much on top of other problems they have! Which is why there are so many ads of the "please take my dog" variety. I have written to DEFRA and I hope others will too. Easy - go to the page and find the e mail address and bash a short letter out. There is no rabies here, if there was it would be both north and south!! Try and stop a bat or a rat from free travel!! Maybe they can shoot dogs they see crossisng the zone, but they would never get them all, anyway! DEFRA kowtowing to the Greeks, and Ive said that in my note to them!

I did read that DEFRA would be reviewing the UK rules in December this year.

I also do know that the Kennel Club in the south has appealed to the relevant department in the Roc. For them to consider allow dogs to go from north to south and long as they have the EU entry requirement / Pet passports.

The Kennel Club were here at the KAR show this year, registering pedigree dogs who live in the north.

All dog people working for the same cause.

In 2005 I brought my cat here from Saudi (had taken him there from the UK so all the paperwork for travel done there). I left here with him and took him to Spain and had no problems getting him in there at all. I was flabergasted when I checked out the DEFRA site and saw that NC was excluded. I intend to write to DEFRA and the MP responsible for the changes to entry rules to.

Woodspeckie. This is why I said read it ALL. The list you are looking at is all EU countries where Cyprus is listed Cyprus 1. Then below it there is a list of non EU countries. Below that is UNLISTED. Click on UNLISTED and it explains quite clearly the situation. it will give you options before and after 31st December. Cick on AFTER.

What you need to do if you are travelling after the 31 December 2011

Dogs and cats resident in an unlisted country entering the UK direct or via an non-EU country

Under the new rules a pet from an UNLISTED country, whether directly or via a non-EU country, will be allowed to enter the UK without quarantine as long as they meet the EU entry requirements:

•be identified by a microchip

•be vaccinated against rabies

•have a blood sample taken by an authorised veterinarian at least 30 days after vaccination and three months before travelling to an EU country

•have a blood test result from an EU-approved laboratory showing that the rabies antib
